INDIVIDUAL DELIVERS HEADSUP, A PERSONAL, INTERACTIVE NEWSPAPER FOR THE FAX AND MOBILE COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTS

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- INDIVIDUAL, Inc. today announced the immediate availability of HeadsUp, a personal, interactive newspaper for the INDIVIDUAL business consumer, delivered daily via fax or wireless E-Mail. HeadsUp employs the company's sophisticated text filtering and refining technology to offer subscribers a powerful, concise daily news tool. INDIVIDUAL is also the provider of First!, the customized news service for corporate departments and workgroups.
Subscribers create their personal edition of HeadsUp by selecting relevant topics from a list of over 700 topic categories in the information technology, telecommunications, healthcare, energy, automotive, and defense industries. Timely, relevant information for chosen topics is presented in a one-page format of news "briefs," one to two sentence story capsules extracted in INDIVIDUAL's proprietary news retrieval system. The briefs provide enough information to understand the content of each news story, and if readers want to know more, they can order the full text on-demand, simply by using a touch-tone phone.
Subscribers may change their topics at any time, and as part of INDIVIDUAL's exclusive technology, HeadsUp topic priorities are automatically adjusted based on the subscribers' on-demand fulfillment patterns.
Each personalized HeadsUp newspaper draws on over 200 news and information sources from around the world. The constantly expanding source pool includes general business feeds (e.g., Reuters, The Financial Times, Knight-Ridder, BusinessWire, PRewswire, etc.) as well as sources specific to clients' markets (e.g., PCWeek, Network World, Electronic News, etc. for the computer market). These incoming sources provide as many as 10,000 stories per day to the HeadsUp filtering software responsible for customizing each newspaper.
Richard Vancil, VP of marketing at INDIVIDUAL, noted, "HeadsUp goes right to the heart of a critical problem for most managers in information-intensive industries: the need for timely, relevant information. With a HeadsUp subscription, a manager or executive gets just the right news every day, with very timely and accessible delivery."
Mark Schmidt, VP of Information Technology at WalMart, remarked, "With my schedule, I don't always get the opportunity to read each news source that I'd like to. HeadsUp lets me stay on top of the important news and developments in technology. It arrives daily, in a one-page snapshot format that is easy to read and act upon."
In addition to fax delivery, HeadsUp meets the requirements of the mobile business professional via wireless electronic mail, through paging networks, and other communications media. INDIVIDUAL has an agreement with Motorola, Inc., to deliver HeadsUp to Motorola's EMBARC subscribers equipped with the NewsStream(tm) wireless data receiver and a portable computing device.
Yosi Amram, president of INDIVIDUAL, stated, "HeadsUp is on the forefront of the trend of using interactive media to restore control to individuals over the information and news they receive. Our initial product offering, First!, validated the market for customized news in the corporate environment, and now with HeadsUp, we're delivering the power and utility of our technology at the personal level."
A subscription to HeadsUp is $49.95 per month for the daily briefing report, including one free full-text retrieval per month. Additional retrievals are available at $4.95 per story request. Subscribers may also select an annual subscription payment term for $895, which includes 150 full-text retrievals.
INDIVIDUAL, Inc., based in Cambidge, Mass., with offices in Burlingame, Calif., was founded in 1989 to build and operate an "information refinery" -- filtering and customizing information from a broad range of electronic sources. INDIVIDUAL's electronic newspapers are created by a proprietary (patent pending) technology based on SMART (System for Manipulation and Retrieval of Text), a text retrieval and filtering software under exclusive license from Cornell University. Customized information is delivered daily to each subscriber via fax, electronic mail, or into Lotus Notes. The company's flagship product, First!, is used by clients wishing to create smarter, more responsive workgroups by institutionalizing current awareness among their key managers. First! won the Information Industry Association's 1991 award for best new business information product, and is currently delivered daily to over 15,000 executives in the information technology, electronics, energy, healthcare, automotive and defense industries.
