INDEPENDENTS DAY IN APRIL FESTIVAL SHOWCASES SMALLER MOVIES.

No need to wait for July 4 - for an estimated 30,000 film buffs, today is Independents Day.

The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Independent Film Festival opens tonight at the Directors Guild of America, kicking off five days and nights of top-notch indie films of the past and present.

The festival opens with a 7:30 p.m. showing of ``Lakeboat,'' actor Joe Mantegna's feature directing debut. Written by David Mamet Noun 1. David Mamet - United States playwright (born in 1947)

, it is an autobiographical coming-of-age story about a college student who joins the world-weary crew of a freighter on the Great Lakes Great Lakes, group of five freshwater lakes, central North America, creating a natural border between the United States and Canada and forming the largest body of freshwater in the world, with a combined surface area of c.95,000 sq mi (246,050 sq km). . The cast includes Charles Durning, Peter Falk, George Wendt, Robert Forster and Denis Denis, king of Portugal: see Diniz.  Leary.

Other new titles on the program:

--``Beat,'' starring Courtney Love as Joan Burroughs, the witty, rebellious wife of '50s bad-boy beat poet William Burroughs.

--``Bruno,'' actress Shirley MacLaine's directing debut. Alex D. Linz plays an 8-year-old boy who wears dresses in order to feel more ``spiritual,'' outraging his Catholic school's mother superior (Kathy Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

American educator and writer best known for her poem "America the Beautiful," written in 1893 and revised in 1904 and 1911.

--``Citizen James,'' a comedy directed, written, produced by and starring ``Cosby'' alum Doug E. Doug Doug E. Doug (born January 7 1970) is an American actor and comedian.

Doug was born Douglas Bourne in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn.
, who plays a young filmmaker trying to make ``The Angela Davis Story'' on a Super-8 camera in his Brooklyn neighborhood.

--``The Photographer,'' with Reg Rogers as Max Martin, a critically praised art photographer stricken with a massive creative block the night before an important gallery opening. He hits the streets of New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Audience awards will be presented at Tuesday's closing-night gala, along with ``Big Eden,'' writer-director Thomas Bezucha's feature film debut about a New York New York, state, United States

The festival also is offering seminars on financing, music, documentaries, shorts, distribution and, of course, film festivals. Neil LaBute (``In the Company of Men'') and Agnieszka Holland (``The Secret Garden'') are set to speak at the directing seminar, while Robert Forster is slated to appear at the program on acting.
