Pepperdine University Pepperdine University is a private institution of higher learning affiliated with the Church of Christ in unincorporated Los Angeles County, California, United States. The university's location overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is adjacent to the city limits of Malibu.  President David Davenport Davenport, city (1990 pop. 95,333), seat of Scott co., E central Iowa, on the Mississippi River; inc. 1836. Starr turned down two deanships at the conservative Malibu campus.

``We were delighted when Judge Starr agreed to accept the deanships, and we are disappointed that he will not be able to undertake these roles,'' Davenport said. ``Judge Starr and I agree that the university's needs have to be met. Unfortunately, events beyond his control have prevented him from joining us.''

Starr had agreed to serve as dean of Pepperdine's School of Law and its School of Public Policy in February 1997.

But at a news conference in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Starr, the Whitewater prosecutor and independent counsel investigating President Clinton's relationship with former White House intern intern /in·tern/ (in´tern) a medical graduate serving in a hospital preparatory to being licensed to practice medicine.

He cited, among other reasons, previous vows to complete the Whitewater investigation before moving on.

``I'm one who believes in moral commitments and I'm living up to those commitments,'' Starr said. ``I'm devoting more than my full time to this investigation.''

Starr's decision also came as supporters of President Clinton continue to pursue allegations of conflicts of interest.

Two years ago, the university's School of Public Policy received more than $1 million in start up funds from publisher Richard Mellon Scaife, one of President Clinton's staunchest critics.
