INCUMBENTS' WAR CHESTS WELL STOCKED SOUTHLAND POLITICIANS HAVE AMASSED MILLIONS FOR 2006.

Byline: Lisa Friedman Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - With the 2006 election season just getting under way, Southland lawmakers already have amassed small fortunes for re-election efforts, newly released campaign finance reports show.

Topping the list was Rep. David Dreier David Timothy Dreier (born July 5, 1952), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since January 1981, representing California's 26th congressional district (map).  still put a lot of time and effort into fundraising,'' said Jack Pitney, political science professor at Claremont McKenna College A member of the Claremont Colleges, Claremont McKenna College is a small, highly selective, private coeducational, liberal arts college enrolling about 1100 students with a curricular emphasis on government, economics, and public policy. .

``Even someone who has a reasonably safe seat can have an unusually close call,'' he said. ``There's always the chance that some self-financed challenger may emerge, or the political winds may shift.''

Dreier raised about $452,000 of his war chest this year, with $144,018 coming from individuals and $309,000 from political action committees that raise and distribute campaign cash on behalf of corporations or interest groups.

Only Reps. Marin Meehan, D-Mass., and Robert Menendez, D-N.J., outpaced Dreier in the fundraising department, according to the reports.

Of seven Golden State lawmakers going into the campaign season with more than $1 million as of June 30, six are from Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties.

``The best defense is a good offense. I learned a long time ago in the Boy Scouts to be prepared,'' Gallegly said.

Added Schiff, ``Whenever you represent an area that has a lot of wealthy people, you always have to keep in mind that you might have a millionaire run against you.''

San Fernando Valley lawmakers so far have tended to raise more money from individual contributors than from political action committees.

Gallegly, for example, has raised $128,560 this year through June 30, with only $2,000 of it coming from a PAC - the National Association of Home Builders The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is one of the largest trade associations in the United States. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the association organizes one of the largest conventions in North America, The International Builders' Show, which draws more than .

Sherman has raised $341,547 so far this year, with $207,447 coming from individuals mostly in the Valley and Los Angeles areas. Sherman's PAC contributors include the home builders association as well as several unions, human rights advocacy groups and some mortgage brokers' associations.

Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon, D-Santa Clarita, raised $195,519 from individuals and $105,150 from interest groups including the National Association of Convenience Stores The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) is a trade association that represents convenience and petroleum retailers. The war chest for Rep. Howard Berman, D-Van Nuys, includes $10,000 raised so far this year from individuals, and about $8,000 from the National Association of Home Builders, the Laborers' Political League and the New Fund for Children & Public Education.
