INCREASING ASTHMA INCIDENCE, TREATMENT, PACES 8% ASTHMA/ALLERGY MARKET GROWTH.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The combined U.S. market for allergy and asthma treatments will grow from $3.1 billion in 1993 to $5.4 billion by the year 2000 at an 8 percent compound annual rate, projects a new study just released by Frost & Sullivan. Asthma drugs and devices will increase their share of market revenues from 54 percent in 1993 to 57 percent by 2000 as both the number of asthma cases rises and physicians increasingly prescribe multiple lines of treatment, while other allergy therapeutics correspondingly dip slightly in share from 43 to 41 percent in the same period, forecasts the report, U.S. ALLERGY AND ASTHMA TREATMENT MARKETS: NEW GENERATION OF PRODUCTS OFFER GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES -- AN ONGOING ASSESSMENT.

Some 15 million Americans now have asthma, with that number swelling by 10 percent annually.

Eleven drugs in eight different asthma and allergy segments are new on the market, including products that have already become, or may soon become, best-sellers in their categories. The product pipeline is also full, with some 20 compounds in nine segments currently in FDA FDA

Generic competition in the allergy and asthma markets will grow rapidly. Generics are now approaching half the total U.S. drug market and will grow well beyond this as cost-conscious administrators increasingly substitute them for higher-priced brands. Research-based drug firms will increasingly set up their own generic operations, enter licensing agreements with generic firms and buy into them.

Cost control initiatives will dampen market growth prospects. Large cost-conscious organizations will be negotiating big discounts, forcing prices down and often limiting their physicians to options on a formulary formulary /for·mu·lary/ (for´mu-lar?e) a collection of recipes, formulas, and prescriptions.

Leading alternatives include dry powder inhalers (DPI (Dots Per Inch) The measurement of the resolution of display and printing systems. Other firms are working on CFC-free metered dose inhalers using hydrofluorocarbons hydrofluorocarbons: see under chlorofluorocarbons.  (HFCs) as an alternative propellant. The CFC ban will cause metered dose inhaler formulations to rise in price. New approaches to immunotherapy currently in clinical testing claim to be safer, faster and more effective than traditional immunotherapy.
