SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The city of Santa Clarita saw a 9 percent sales-tax growth in the second quarter of 2004 compared with the year before, officials said Wednesday.

It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. , by far, continues to be our single largest source of revenue,'' City Treasurer Darren Hernandez said in a statement. ``When people shop in the city, their sales tax dollars stay right here at home. This is what enables us to build such great facilities and provide such a high level of parks, recreation and public safety services.''

Sales-tax revenue makes up a little less than half of Santa Clarita's general fund of $60 million. The rest includes property taxes and vehicle license fees.

Sales tax from new automobile sales contributed $1.68 million to the city coffers - a 13 percent increase from the prior year. It accounted for 27 percent of city's total sales tax receipts.

General retail produced $1.69 million - an 8.1 percent increase from the same three-month period in 2003.
