Omar Abutaleb, the project manager, said the city started the work last week and will continue through May 21.

So far, work has been done on 70 out of about 200 signalized intersections in the city.

The city will save an estimated $2 million over the life span of the diodes, which not only conserve energy but last seven to 10 years.

``Traffic will have at least one lane open in each direction. Pedestrians will still be able to cross,'' he said.
