IN WANING DAYS OF SEASON, SUMMER JAM TURNS HEADS.

 this time of year," said Feron's mother, Linda Vazquez-Smith of Eugene. She said Summer Jam allowed her to spend some time in a family-friendly atmosphere with Feron, 6, and her other son, 11-year-old Raven.

An estimated 1,000 people attended the event, now in its third year, said Juan Shedrick, pastor of New Day Church, the event's organizer. Founded two years ago, the church holds services at Cascade Middle School in northwest Eugene.

Providing a carnival-like atmosphere to those who could not afford to attend the Lane County Fair The Lane County Fair is an annual celebration held in Eugene, Oregon every August featuring food, music and other entertainment. A popular stop for school-bound youngsters was the outdoor hair salon.

Under a basketball hoop festooned with balloons, two stylists provided trims and a few buzz cuts.

"Feron really needed a haircut. He was beginning to look like a mop head," said Vazquez-Smith.

Hair stylist Deborah Smith estimates they did about 100 haircuts Saturday. But nothing too fancy, she said.

"Quick and easy, as many as I can do is the order of the day," Smith said.

Awaiting her turn for a layered trim of her tresses was Stephanie Smith of Springfield.

"I like how Summer Jam is a family environment," she said, "and it's free."
