Thousands of students from more than 30 Los Angeles school The Los Angeles School of Urbanism is an academic movement emerged during the mid-1980s, loosely based at the University of Southern California and UCLA, that poses a challenge to the dominant Chicago School of Urbanism.  marching bands played their hearts out Saturday at the 16th annual Band Field Competition.

The event, hosted by the Granada Hills High School Granada Hills Charter High School (Granada Hills High School) is a public, charter, co-educational, secondary school consisting of students in grades 9-12. The school colors are green, black, and white.  Highlander Marching Band, was the largest band tournament in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .

``It brings so many people together,'' said Granada High drum major Robyn Brauer. ``For people to come out on a Saturday and listen to music and celebrate music is great - it's just awesome.''

Polytechnic High from Sun Valley put together a notable performance, taking first place in two of three divisional categories, beating out rivals Monroe High School For other uses, see James Monroe High School.

``We were a little worried about Monroe,'' said Poly band member Miguel Contreras Miguel Contreras (September 17, 1952–May 6, 2005) was an American labor leader. He "was known as a king-maker for both local and state politicians."[1] . ``But we had confidence we'd win.''

Contreras, who plays the alto saxophone The alto saxophone is a variety of the saxophone, a family of woodwind instruments invented by Adolphe Sax. The alto is the third smallest of the saxophone family, which consists of ten sizes of saxophone (see saxophone). , said his band didn't even place in the last competition. He credited the team's turnaround to his teacher's lectures and the band's fortitude.

``We all came together,'' he said.

The big winners of the day came out of Division 4A, as Saugus and El Camino Real high schools won the sweepstakes awards for general excellence.
