We don't have the crime and a lot of the other problems that L.A. has.'' Thus Santa Clarita and other outlying communities have become company towns for fire departments, police department and other public agencies. There's Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Shayne York, who was off duty from his job at the Pitchess Detention Center when he was shot to death in a robbery attempt last summer in Buena Park. And there is Glendale police Officer Charles Lazzaretto of Valencia, who was killed last May during an investigation in Chatsworth. Glendale Firefighter Steve Parrish and his wife, Bonnie, didn't know Dupee. But when he died, the Santa Clarita couple received condolence calls. ``A lot of people called to say they were sad about the captain who passed away,'' Bonnie Parrish said. ``They sent condolences like he was a member of our family. It was, you know. We're all family.'' Families united Firefighters and police families are united by the profession. ``The firefighter wives have an unspoken network,'' Parrish explained. ``If you need a hand, you need help, someone's always there for you. After the earthquake everyone comes by to make sure you're OK. They know where you live, they know your husband is on (duty) and they check on you. ``When we're watching the news and you see something terrible happen to someone, it happens to you. I have a neighbor who's a Beverly Hills police officer, and I worry about him. I think it's that way for everyone who knows a policeman or a firefighter. You worry for them. You worry with their wives. You cry when they cry.'' The Parrishes were swept into a community of mourning when Lazzaretto died. The couples had gotten to know each other in a childbirth-preparation class months before he was killed. Help from neighbors ``There's a tremendous connection in this community,'' Parrish said. It's a good thing in a way that survivors live in a city that still has a small-town closeness. Once the funeral is over and the officer's colleagues go back to work, the neighbors are there, Brunzell said. ``When my husband passed away, my neighbors knew he was in law enforcement,'' she said. ``They were always there. They wanted to do anything they could for us - they took the trash out, helped with the kids. They liked knowing there's a policeman in the neighborhood. But then they took the good with the bad.''
