This is explained by the tropical origins of plants. Where rainfall is heavier, as in the Northwest, Northeast and Southeast parts of the U.S., pH tends to be in the acid range. In fact, you can generally tell what kind of pH a plant prefers by its habitat. Plants from areas with a Mediterranean climate A Mediterranean climate is a climate that resembles the climate of the lands in the Mediterranean Basin. Outside the Mediterranean, this climate covers relatively small areas of the Earth, and generally occurs on the western coasts of continental landmasses, roughly between like our own - where the year is divided into a short wet season followed by a long dry one - are partial to soil with an alkaline pH. Other plants well-suited to acid soil and our hot and dry Valley climate are junipers and arborvitae arborvitae (är'bərvī`tē) [Lat.,=tree of life], aromatic evergreen tree of the genus Thuja of the family Cupressaceae (cypress family), with scalelike leaves borne on flattened branchlets of a fanlike appearance and with very . Thirty or 40 years ago, junipers and arborvitae were a mainstay of Valley landscapes. Gradually, flowering perennials have taken their place. Yet, the simplest and most easily maintained landscape, whether your soil is alkaline or acidic, remains the juniper landscape. There is probably no better solution for a difficult-to-landscape and -irrigate slope than tam junipers (Juniperus sabina JUNIPERUS SABINA, med. jur. This plant is commonly called savine. 2.
