A signer of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and a delegate to the Continental Congress (1787), he served as governor of Massachusetts (1810-1811) and as Vice President of the United States GITTELSON Staff Writer NEWHALL Newhall may refer to:

Heading into tonight's nonleague game at Westlake (2-0), Howell is averaging more than 100 yards per game and has 15 receptions for 335 yards. He has scored seven of Hart's nine touchdowns; he's also averaging more than 50 yards on kickoff returns. It has been a tough start for Hart (1-2), and Howell is among a handful of players who have performed at a high level in all three games. ``We're working hard and just doing what the coaches tell us to do,'' Howell said. ``If we practice like we can practice and play like we can play, we should win.'' After an explosive lower-level season two years ago as a freshman playing one step up on Hart's junior varsity team For the American rock band, see . In sports, usually at the high school and college levels, members of a team who are not the main players in a competition (such as a football or basketball game) are called junior varsity players. , Howell was limited to 736 yards in 2005 because of a misdiagnosed ankle injury. Now that Howell, a 6-foot, 205-pounder with blazing speed and excellent tackle-breaking ability, is healthy, he's right there with California's best -- including rivals Shane Vereen from Valencia and J.J. DiLuigi from Canyon. ``He's just a great athlete,'' head coach Mike Herrington said. ``He's got good hands, and we expected a lot from his this year.'' gerry.gittelson@dailynews.com (661) 257-5218 TONIGHT'S GAMES CANYON (1-2) at LANCASTER (1-2), 7 p.m. KEEP AN EYE ON: Nick Madia, OL, Canyon - Canyon loves to run behind Madia, the Foothill League's strongest player who bench-presses 395 pounds. If the junior can make his blocks, perhaps J.J DiLuigi will break his first long TD run of the season. OUTLOOK: Canyon figures to have a much easier time tonight after opening against three elite opponents that each qualified for a Southern Section final last year. However, don't expect Canyon, coming off two consecutive losses, to overlook anyone. That's not veteran coach Harry Welch's style. ``Lancaster isn't a walkover. We're still going to have to come out and play,'' J.J. DiLuigi said. ``But I think it will be a better game for us.'' Lancaster, which also has lost twice in a row, is led by RB/S Marcus Wyre, who leads the team in rushing (207 yards, one TD), tackles (32) and kickoff returns (30.0 avg.). HART (1-2) at WESTLAKE (2-0), 7 p.m. KEEP AN EYE ON: Michael Vairo, WR, Hart - Vairo has come on strong the past two games. In a victory at Bishop Amat last week, he caught three passes for 90 yards and a TD. OUTLOOK: Hart, hoping to parlay An open programming interface (API) to a service provider's network (the network operator), developed by the Parlay Group (www.parlay.org). By enabling the customer's application to talk directly to the network, it allows the end user to have greater access to network information as well the momentum after its first victory last week, probably will feed the football to Delano Howell until someone stops him. Howell, a junior, scored five TDs last week. He's a dangerous runner, receiver and kick returner. Hart's Alex Pettee has passed for 682 yards and four TDs. Other key starters include WR/DB Brandon Arndt, LBs Patrick Larimore and Chris Hickok and DB B.R. Holbrook. Westlake, coming off a 3-7 season, hasn't made the playoffs since winning the 2003 Div. IV title. QB Ryan Campbell This article is about the Cricketer. For the Canadian former Ice Hockey player, see Ryan Campbell (Ice Hockey Player). Ryan John Campbell (born February 7, 1972 in Perth) is a former Australian cricketer. , a three-year starter, has passed for 327 yards and accounted for five TDs (two rushing, three passing). PK Jordan Mannisto has three FGs, and he's averaging 43 yards per punt. ORANGE LUTHERAN (3-0) at VALENCIA (1-2), 7 p.m. KEEP AN EYE ON: Shane Vereen, RB, Valencia - Vereen, one of California's fastest football players, hasn't broken as many long runs as usual this season. Perhaps tonight he finds some daylight. OUTLOOK: It's gut-check time for Valencia, which has blown second-half leads in both of its losses and has yet to hold an opponent to fewer than five TDs. Valencia is in for another difficult test against Orange Lutheran, one of Orange County's top programs. Valencia's Graham Wilbert has passed for 1,039 yards in three games -- including 318 or more each week -- and 11 TDs. Nick Hale, who had eight receptions for 134 yards against Birmingham last week, has 15 catches for 185 yards over the past two games. Orange Lutheran has won by an average margin of nearly 37 points per game. Aaron Corp has passed for 507 yards and four TDs with no INTs, and he also leads the team with 207 yards rushing. Austin Pettis has 18 receptions and three TDs. Orange Lutheran has 25 players who weigh 215 pounds or more; Valencia has seven. CHINO (2-0) vs. SAUGUS (1-1) at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. 7:30 p.m. KEEP AN EYE ON: Marvin Walker, RB, Chino - Walker (201 yards, five TDs) has been a workhorse work·horse n. 1. Something, such as a machine, that performs dependably under heavy or prolonged use: "the 50-year-old DC-3 ... in both victories. He carried 22 times for 89 yards and two TDs last week in a victory over Don Lugo. OUTLOOK: Saugus, which has had difficultly scoring in the red zone, needs to execute better. Twice Saugus has fumbled on the 1-yard line, and the Centurions can't afford such mistakes if they expect to succeed against a favored opponent. ``When it comes to turnovers, that's something you can't coach,'' Saugus coach Jason Bornn said. ``You either hold onto the ball or you don't.'' Chino, led by LB Lucas Barbosa, has allowed an average of fewer than 200 yards per game. ``Chino is sick. They're very, very good,'' Bornn said. ``They're big and strong, and both teams they've beaten are very good. It's a challenge, and that's why we scheduled them.'' Saugus' top players are QB Nick Gauthier, RB Ryan Zirbel, OL Ramsen Golpashin, LBs Ryan and Justin McKillop and DBs Mario Wright and Kyle <noinclude></noinclude> ''This article or section is being rewritten at One derivation of the surname is from the Scottish Highland word caol, 'channel', or 'strait'.
