VALLEY INDEX FALLS: Shares of most companies in the Daily News Index were lower Friday, led by Camarillo's Salem Communications Salem Communications (NASDAQ: SALM) is a media company specializing in religious and conservative talk radio which operates in the United States, with 99 U.S. commercial radio stations (pending acquisitions) that are primarily concentrated in the nation's biggest markets,  Inc. and On Assignment Inc. of Agoura Hills. Salem Communications fell $1.25 to $23.375. On Assignment fell $2.125 to $27.25.

SOUR NOTE: Shares of musical instrument retailer Guitar Center Inc. fell nearly 12 percent Friday, a day after the company reported it lost $149,000, or 1 cent per diluted share, in its second quarter ended June 30. The Agoura Hills-based company's stock fell $1.3126 to close Friday at $9.75. The company said its recent purchase of the leading catalog and Internet retailer of musical instruments cut 11 cents of the pro forma As a matter of form or for the sake of form.
