Taos Town Hall
could be cut off
For the second time in two months, Qwest Communications is ready to shut off most of the telephones and all Internet in Taos Town Hall.
Town staff has until Feb. 25 to figure out a way to provide land-line phone and Internet service to its offices, after the communications giant sent a 10-day disconnenct notice to OneConnect, the service provider for town government.
The town of Taos routes its phone systems through the Internet, a system called voiceover IP, so that when the Internet goes out, so do the phones. OneConnect, which began as ZiaNet, uses Qwest land-based lines to hook up its service.
"We are looking at all options," said Cathy Connelly, the town's public information officer.
Bingaman to meet with students
U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman will be in Santa Fe on Wednesday to host his annual Student Leadership Institute -- seminars he conducts with New Mexico high-school students to build their interest in public policy.
During Bingaman's annual Student Leadership Institutes, the senator's advisers will lead discussions on various issues such as education, national security and the economy.
In addition, Bingaman himself will host a town hall discussion with the high-school students. This is Bingaman's 21st year hosting the seminar.
