But the reason is not what you might expect.

``The sculptor, Frederic Bartholdi, never intended for people to climb to the top of the Statue of Liberty,'' said National Park Service spokesman Brian Feeney Brian Feeney leads the da Vinci Project, a participant in the X-Prize competition, and is based in Ontario, Canada. Feeney has a strong background in large project management and 3D computer-aided design. .

The issue was safety, not security, Feeney continued, given the narrow staircase and the 364 steps to the top.
