VEDC VEDC Valley Economic Development Center (Los Angeles, CA, USA)  BOSS: Roberto Barragan has become the second interim director of the Valley Economic Development Center in two months, officials said Friday. SEMTECH ACQUISITION: Semtech Corp., a Newbury Park-based semiconductor firm, announced Friday that it has purchased Practical Sciences, Inc., for an undisclosed sum. Practical Sciencesof Oxnard specializes in high-speed communications components, including clock and data recovery devices. Semtech said the purchase will strengthen its position in the fiber optic market.

IWERKS NAMES: Burbank-based Iwerks Entertainment Iwerks Entertainment was founded in 1985 by Stan Kinsey and Don Iwerks, two former Disney Executives, and became well known through 1996 as a leading developer of special venue and virtual reality theaters throughout the world.  Inc. has named Hollywood veterans Peter Guber and Paul Schaeffer as chairman and vice chairman, respectively. Guber and Schaeffer are the co-founders and current chairman and vice chairman of the Mandalay Entertainment Group. Guber is best known for being the chairman of Sony Pictures between 1989 and 1995.
