NEWHALL RISES SHARPLY: Shares in Valencia-based The Newhall Land and Farming Company The Newhall Land and Farming Company is a land management company based in Valencia, California, United States. The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state.  zoomed up $5.75 Friday, to close at a 52-week high of $32, but no one seems to know why.

 NEEDS A MALL: A financial consultant has determined that $400 million in retail sales is leaking from Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  to neighboring communities because the city doesn't have a central shopping mall. Encino-based Natelson Co. Inc. said Simi Valley could raise its annual retail sales from $700 million to $1.1 billion if it had more stores typically found in shopping malls like the one Forest City Development has tried for two years to create.
