MAY STORES TO EXPAND: May Department Stores The May Department Stores Company was a department store chain founded in 1877 by David May in Leadville, Colorado. Its headquarters moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1905, and the company went public in 1911.  Co. said it will spend $3.6 billion in the next five years to open 100 new department stores This is a list of department stores. The St. Louis-based operator of Robinsons-May, Lord & Taylor, Hecht's, Filene's and other chains said it will spend $725 million this year to open 19 new stores and expand seven, adding 2.9 million square feet of retail space. It will also remodel 22 other stores. May, the third-largest U.S. operator of upscale department stores, did not specify which stores it would renovate or where it would expand.

 EXPANDS: The owners of the Los Angeles Farmers' Market announced Friday they've joined with a developer to build a $100 million shopping and entertainment complex alongside the historic attraction. To be known as The Grove at Farmers' Market, the complex will include 640,000 square feet of high-end shops, restaurants, movie theaters and offices, according to Caruso Affiliated Holdings, the project's developer. The center is designed to leave intact the colorful Farmers' Market at Third Street and Fairfax Avenue, said Hank Hilty, president of A.F. Gilmore Co., which owns the market.
