VALLEY INDEX FALLS: Shares of most companies in the Daily News Index were lower Friday, led by Camarillo's Vitesse Semiconductor Corp., which fell $3.875 to $82.375 after a competitor in the semiconductor chip industry announced a surprising earnings shortfall and a Salomon Smith Barney Smith Barney is a division of Citigroup Global Capital Markets Inc., a global, full-service financial firm, that provides brokerage, investment banking and asset management services to corporations, governments and individuals around the world.  analyst cut its rating to ``market outperform'' from ``buy.''

OFFICES CLOSED: Government offices and most banks will be closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day Columbus Day, holiday commemorating Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. It has been traditionally celebrated on Oct. 12 throughout most of the United States, parts of Canada, and in several of the Latin American republics. . Stock exchanges will be open. But bond markets and commodity trading in financial contracts will be closed. In advance of the holiday, bond markets closed early Friday. Stock markets operated at regular hours.

PROFIT WARNING: Burbank-based Align-Rite International Inc. warned that second-quarter profits will be below expectations. The company said it expects an increase of 11 percent compared to the like period a year ago but below management's expectations. Shares of Align-Rite fell 43.75 cents to $18.125 but at one point Friday were as low as $16.
