IMSL Distributed Network Fortran Library Available for NEC SX-4 Series Supercomputers.

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1998--Visual Numerics, Inc. today announced that IMSL IMSL International Mathematical and Statistical Library
IMSL International Mathematics & Statistics Library
IMSL Inverted Microstrip Line
IMSL Injection Molding Systems Limited
IMSL International Mathematical Subroutine Library
(R) Distributed Network Fortran Library (DNFL), a Fortran 90-based numerical library, is now available for NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
 SX-4 Series supercomputers.

This release is a logical step to provide industry-standard numerical software for high end SX-4 Series parallel vector system users.

Today, a large and growing number of mission critical and research users are focusing on the SX-4 Series as a necessary tool for their applications. The users have determined that for their environments, the SX-4 Series is providing the highest performance for the least total investment in hardware and programming. They are able to continue development of their shared memory (1) Using part of main memory to support a low-cost display circuit that does not have its own memory. See shared video memory.

 models.

Since the SX-4 Series is increasingly being integrated into networked systems as a key cycle server, providing DNFL for this platform is a key to providing the comprehensive support environment necessary to encompass the diverse HPC (Handheld PC) A palmtop computer that weighs less than one pound and runs specialized versions of popular applications. Microsoft coined the term for its Windows CE operating system, which is an abbreviated version of Windows. See Pocket PC.  systems used by our customers.

DNFL enables developers to optimize Fortran application performance by employing under-utilized processors, regardless of type, in a supercomputer or network. This is accomplished through DNFL's smart self-scheduling algorithm (SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) A fault tolerant peripheral interface from IBM that transfers data at 80 and 160 Mbytes/sec. SSA uses SCSI commands, allowing existing software to drive SSA peripherals, which are typically disk drives. ) - the underlying technology. Working from a prioritized list of available processors (that can be generated automatically with DNFL), the SSA allocates the workload continuously so the fastest processors receive a larger share of the work. As a result, super-linear and scaleable performance can be realized in correlation to the network's computing power.

In the case of the SX-4 Series, which has the fastest general purpose processors available, DNFL is primarily designed to support distributed applications An application made up of distinct components running in separate runtime environments, usually on different platforms connected via a network. Typical distributed applications  that execute across SX-4 Series Multi Node systems. A further benefit is that DNFL simplifies and enables applications that are portable across different vendor platforms.

Tadashi Watanabe, General Manager of NEC's Supercomputer Marketing Promotion Division, said "The availability of IMSL DNFL for our SX-4 Series is an important step for both NEC and our users. DNFL provides our users with FORTRAN90 based industry-standard numerical libraries that can achieve very high performance on SX-4 Series Single Node shared memory models as well as on SX-4 Series Multi Node distributed memory models."

DNFL numerical software is designed to exploit MPI MPI - Message Passing Interface  technology, which offers developers an effective path to upgrade legacy applications that increase utility and performance, even on very powerful systems.

"It is important to us that our customers receive the best possible return on their investments in hardware and software for high performance computing," said Ted Charter, Executive Vice President of Visual Numerics. "Key to this return is the acquisition of hardware and software which are capable of growing with the customers needs. The NEC SX Series and the IMSL Distributed Network Fortran Library (DNFL) from Visual Numerics offer our customers not only speed and accuracy but also scalability to expand with our customers demand to solve larger and more complex problems in a cost effective manner."

DNFL also provides functionality for dynamic error processing for distributed systems Distributed systems (computers)
