), Portland, Maine, has announced that Crypto-Scan, the company's product that is used in laboratory testing of water supplies for the presence of Cryptosporidium parvum, has received approval as an official product under the recently enacted Water Supply Regulations by the Drinking Water Inspectorate The Drinking Water Inspectorate is a section of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) set up to regulate the public water supply companies in England and Wales.  ("DWI An abbreviation for driving while intoxicated, which is an offense committed by an individual who operates a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or Drugs and Narcotics. ") in the United Kingdom.

The DWI has mandated continuous monitoring of over 300 water sources in England and Wales England and Wales are both constituent countries of the United Kingdom, that together share a single legal system: English law. Legislatively, England and Wales are treated as a single unit (see State (law)) for the conflict of laws.  under new regulations that became effective last year. After a water sample is collected and concentrated, the Crypto-Scan immunomagnetic separation technology prepares the sample for microscopic detection of the Cryptosporidium cryptosporidium (krĭp'tōspərĭd`ēəm), genus of protozoans having at least four species; they are waterborne parasites that cause the disease cryptosporidiosis.  parasite. In 1993, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis Cryptosporidiosis Definition

in Wisconsin caused approximately 4,000 hospitalizations and over 100 deaths. Since then, Cryptosporidium has been noted as the cause of many outbreaks around the world.

"This approval is an important milestone for the company in one of our non-animal health business segments, validating several years of effort by our R&D team," commented Michael F. Brigham, president and chief executive officer. "Our product provides a needed alternative for water utilities performing testing of drinking water supplies for this dangerous parasite."

The multi-laboratory, two-stage, validation study (that was required to gain this approval) was coordinated by John Watkins of CREH Analytical Laboratories in Yorkshire, England in accordance with DWI protocols. "Crypto-Scan produced consistent and accurate results," commented Mr. Watkins. "We are pleased to have participated in the evaluation of the first such new product to be approved under the new regulations. I believe that the U.K. water utilities will welcome an alternative product."

Kevin Shrimpton of Adreck Diagnostics Ltd., the company's exclusive distributor of this product in the U.K. commented, "I have long believed that this product will compete effectively for sales in this market. We will be offering more economical and efficient testing than the competitive product. I believe the market for monitoring source water by the utilities could be as large or larger than the mandated testing market."
