IMMIGRATION RIGHTS RALLIES PLANNED CARDINAL ROGER MAHONY TO SPEAK ON ISSUE AS DEBATE CONTINUES.

Byline: RACHEL URANGA Staff Writer

Immigrants' rights advocates plan to marshal support for their cause this month in the hope of sparking reform before Congress turns its attention to the November election.

Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important.  rights marches are planned for the Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  weekend and voter registration drives are ramping up. Cardinal Roger Mahony His Eminence Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (born February 27, 1936) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He currently serves as the fourth Archbishop of Los Angeles, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991.  -- who made national headlines earlier this year when he announced that he would advise his priests to defyfederal rules prohibiting them from aiding illegal immigrants -- is expected to make a major immigration address during his Labor Day Mass.

``I don't see much on the horizon that is going to result in meaningful legislation by the end of September,'' he told the Friday Morning Group.

Nonetheless, immigrant rights groups say they hope to build momentum for reform.

``We are doing this for the immigrant women that are suffering, being separated from their family,'' said Gloria Saucedo, director of Hermandad Mexicana in Van Nuys, who is one of the key organizers for today's march in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or .

Saucedo -- who has been spreading word of the rally on Spanish-language radio shows -- is calling for women to join her in solidarity with Elvira Arellano, a 31-year-old cleaning lady and illegal immigrant facing deportation, who took sanctuary in a Chicago church.

Hermandad together with the March 25th Coalition -- which organized a massive protest last spring against a proposed bill that would criminalize crim·i·nal·ize

Arellano was ordered deported after being caught using a false Social Security card at her job during a 2002 sweep of O'Hare International Airport O'Hare International Airport is an airport located in Chicago, Illinois, United States, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of the Chicago Loop. Instead of surrendering, she took refuge at a Methodist church. In the process, she has become the poster child for immigrant rights activists and a symbol of defiant lawbreakers for opponents.

``This is a woman who was deported once, returned using false documents. She is hardly a sympathetic case,'' said Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is a non-partisan, non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization in the United States that advocates for reforms of U.S. immigration policies that would result in significant immigration reduction. , which advocates tough border policies.

``Trying to change policy tugging on heartstrings doesn't go well with people. They see through it.''

But with legislation stalled in Congress, it is likely that the polarizing debate will continue.

``It's very hard to concede that any piece of legislation is going to get passed,'' said Gordon Hanson, an immigration expert at the University of California, San Diego UCSD is consistently ranked among the top ten public universities for undergraduate education in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.[3] It is a Public Ivy. ``What it takes to bring the two sides together is national leadership and right now with a tight midterm election, everyone is running from national leadership.''
