IMM SUPPORTS CTIA'S DECISION TO MOVE ENHANCED TDMA FORWARD
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- International Mobile Machines Corporation (AMEX: IMM) said today that its patented Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology continues to be enhanced as the U.S. cellular industry proceeds forward with the IS-54 TDMA standard.
In a recent announcement by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) asking the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) to begin development of a second technical digital access standard, the CTIA directed that TIA "not slow its continued work on enhancements to TDMA," the digital technique that has already been standardized for the cellular industry.
Commenting on the CTIA's recent action, William J. Hilsman, chairman and chief executive officer of IMM, said, "The '90s will see the wireless digital access market become the largest growth segment of the telecommunications industry. IMM is proud that the TDMA technology we developed and employ worldwide in our Ultraphone digital radiotelephone systems is the technology of primary choice of the cellular industry in the United States, Canada, Europe and other countries. Digital cellular systems, utilizing TDMA technology, are being produced for customer use in these countries this year."
The IS-54 U.S. digital cellular standard provides for three simultaneous telephone calls per channel. IMM's Ultraphone system has been operating since 1986 with four simultaneous telephone calls per channel in both fixed and mobile applications. Through a licensing agreement with IMM, Hughes Network Systems, a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft Company, which is a unit of GM, has already enhanced TDMA to 10 calls per channel.
"There will be other technologies coming into the marketplace over time. IMM itself will introduce additional technologies. We started this evolution and provided the lead in this fast-growing wireless digital access market," Hilsman concluded.
