IMC Networks Announces Low-Cost Media Conversion.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 1995--IMC Networks is introducing a low-cost, modular Ethernet media converter A device that converts from one type of media to another. It typically refers to a hardware device that connects different transmission media; for example, from twisted pair to coax or from twisted pair to optical fiber. .

MediaConverters are designed to convert one cabling type to another by simply installing interchangeable MediaConverter Port Interface Modules (McPIMs).

The compact base units are available in three versions:

MediaConverter/2 features 2 slots for installing one or two McPIMs and is table-top or, optionally, wall-mountable.

MediaConverter/4 features 4 slots for installing from one to four McPIMs and is table-top or, optionally, wall-mountable.

MediaConverter/8 features 8 slots for installing from one to eight McPIMs and is a one U (1.75"/4.4cm) high rack-mountable (in addition to table or wall mount) unit.

MediaConverters are passive devices needing only to share a power source from the base unit. Each McPIM has its own `self-contained' circuitry permitting it to perform its own signal conversion. McPIMs are `hot-swappable' and are available for converting:

10baseT twisted pair A thin-diameter wire (22 to 26 gauge) commonly used for telephone and network cabling. The wires are twisted around each other to minimize interference from other twisted pairs in the cable (Alexander Graham Bell invented this and was awarded a patent for it in 1881).  to 10baseFL/FOIRL fiber optic (TP/FO),

10baseT to 10base2 thin coaxial (TP/BNC),

10base2 to 10baseFL/FOIRL (BNC/FO),

10baseT to single-mode fiber See singlemode fiber.  (TP/FO-SingleMode) and

10base2 to single-mode fiber (BNC/FO-SingleMode).

McPIMs with BNC (hardware) BNC - A connector for coaxial cable such as that used for some video connections and RG58 "cheapernet" connections. A BNC connector has a bayonet-type shell with two small knobs on the female connector which lock into spiral slots in the male connector when it is twisted  ports feature the unique capability of running Ethernet over 93 Ohm (ARCnet, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  3270) and 75 Ohm (PCnet, WANG), as well as standard 50 Ohm coaxial cabling using Cabling Option Resistor Kits (CORKs). This feature represents installation cost-savings by using existing cabling to convert to Ethernet.

McPIMs with BNC ports also feature a 2-pin jumper block at position JP2 next to the BNC connector (Bayonet Nut Coupling) A commonly used plug and socket for audio, video and networking applications that provides a tight connection. Using a mount somewhat similar to the way a bayonet (knife) is mounted onto the end of a rifle, BNCs are used to connect a variety of . This jumper block allows a thin coaxial segment to be terminated at the MediaConverter without an additional ``T'' connector and terminator.

McPIMs can also be used with IMC's EtherWay hubs and AnyWay LANrepeaters. McPIMs can be installed in any available Port Interface Module (PIM (1) (Protocol Independent Multicast) A multicast routing protocol endorsed by the IETF. Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, it comes in two flavors: Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients in the target group are in a concentrated ) slot.

MediaConverters are manufactured in the United States, carry a 2-year end-user warranty and are currently available for shipment. Base unit pricing starts at $250. McPIMs range in price from $200 to $780.

IMC (Internet Mail Consortium, Santa Cruz, CA, www.imc.org) An industry trade association founded in 1996 by Paul Hoffman and Dave Crocker that promotes Internet e-mail standards and features.  Networks specializes in Ethernet technology and is the pioneer in modular repeaters and hubs. IMC has one of the most complete and innovative lines of Ethernet networking products available today, offering more than 50 products including SNMP-manageable, modular repeaters and hubs, media converters, miniature transceivers and network interface cards. IMC's products allow virtually any combination of coaxial, twisted pair and fiber optic cabling in an Ethernet network.
