IMC Announces Virtual Workgroup Switching Engine for Ethernet Hubs.IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 1995--IMC Networks is introducing Virtual Switching Hub A device that acts as a central switch or PBX, connecting one line to another. In a local area network (LAN), a switching hub gives any two stations on the network the full bandwidth of the line. Module (Virtual SHM SHM Simple Harmonic Motion SHM Structural Health Monitoring SHM Society of Hospital Medicine (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) SHM Shaman (Everquest) SHM Short Hold Mode SHM Scalar Helium Magnetometer ), a microcomputer-based module for the EtherWay family of modular, SNMP-Manageable Ethernet hubs. The new module provides users with programmable Ethernet ``Store-and-Forward'' switching between Virtual Workgroups. According to Michael Schleider, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, ``The use of this new product, in concert with IMC's EtherWay family of MCD MCD Minor Civil Division MCD McDonalds (restaurant) Mcd Macedonian (linguistics) MCD Municipal Corporation of Delhi MCD Magnetic Circular Dichroism MCD Mad Cow Disease (Multiple Collision Domain) hubs, allows EtherWay hubs to act as the central switching device for large Ethernet LANs.'' The modular Virtual SHM provides various combinations of switched Ethernet ports to users of EtherWay hubs. It also may be switched to Virtual Mode Operation (VMO VMO Vendor Management Office VMO Veterinary Medical Officer VMO Visiting Medical Officer VMO Vastus Medialis Oblique (muscle) VMO Marine Observation Squadron VMO Volunteer Measuring Official ) for higher levels of performance. VMO permits the network systems administrator to arbitrarily construct Virtual Workgroups from multiple LANs on the network. The administrator can also select which workstations within each workgroup can have full access to the network. Virtual Workgroups gain performance advantages as well as enhanced security levels. Virtual SHM plugs into any available Hub Module (HM) slot on EtherWay hubs and is backward compatible to existing hubs. ``The Virtual SHM is representative of our continuing effort to expand the capability of our product offering,'' said Jerry Roby, President/CEO, ``as well as provide our customers with seamless migration paths to future technologies.'' The Virtual SHM is manageable by SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. if the EtherWay hub contains an SNMP Hub Management Module. It also supports a wide array of Ethernet cabling media through the use of ``hot-swappable'' Port Interface Modules (PIMs). Virtual SHM features an on-board WAN interface port that provides dedicated WAN I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output. I/O - Input/Output to the Virtual Workgroup members; a dynamic switching matrix reduces the number of unnecessary frames transmitted over the WAN port. Virtual SHM will be available in three versions: Virtual/3 SHM includes a DB-9 RS-232 serial interface and two full wirespeed switched Ethernet ports -- one that connects to the backplane of the EtherWay hub and a second port for optionally installing a Port Interface Module (PIM (1) (Protocol Independent Multicast) A multicast routing protocol endorsed by the IETF. Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, it comes in two flavors: Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients in the target group are in a concentrated ) for a thick coaxial, thin coaxial, UTP/STP, multi-mode fiber or single-mode fiber media segment. Virtual/4 SHM includes the same ports as Virtual/3 SHM plus an STP/UTP RJ-45 connector for a full wirespeed, switched Ethernet connection between ports 1, 2 and 4. Virtual/5 SHM includes the same 4 ports as Virtual/4 SHM plus an additional WAN interface. IMC (Internet Mail Consortium, Santa Cruz, CA, www.imc.org) An industry trade association founded in 1996 by Paul Hoffman and Dave Crocker that promotes Internet e-mail standards and features. expects to release Virtual SHM with pricing starting at $2,495.
