ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD REPORTS AUGUST TRAFFIC

ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD REPORTS AUGUST TRAFFIC
CHICAGO, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Illinois Central Railroad

(NYSE: IC) today reported that carloadings in August totaled 70,495, a decrease of 5 percent compared to the same month last year. Loadings for the month were adversely affected by Hurricane Andrew in Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
August grain loads of 6,565 were down 26 percent compared to year ago when Russian exports were unusually strong. This decline was more than offset by increases in grain mill products and coal. Grain mill loadings of 6,013 were up 14 percent reflecting continued strength in domestic and export feed markets. Coal loads of 20,997 were up 9 percent reflecting, in part, a plant closing last year for repair.
The hurricane had its greatest effect on three major commodity groups: chemicals, paper and intermodal. Chemical loads of 9,194 were down 12 percent; paper loads of 5,495 were down 15 percent; intermodal loads of 6,667 were down 9 percent. All other loadings of 15,564 were down 6 percent.
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Dale W. Phillips indicated management's expectations that total September loads should be reasonably close to the same month last year.
