(*1) Patent Pending (Application 2004-322198)

Since June 2003, IIJ has been operating the SMF (1) (Standard Messaging Format) An electronic mail format for Novell's MHS messaging system. The application puts the data into this format in order to send an e-mail message.  network management system, which provides centralized remote administration of routers over the Internet. Customers rave about this system's ability to cut operation and administration costs, its high security, and its user-friendly interface. It is currently used in over 3,000 locations by communications carriers providing Internet-based VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  services and companies building multi-node, nation-wide networks using VPNs.

SMF-LAN gets its foundation from SMF technology and uses that technology to create a network management system that can provide the same functionality on wide-area Ethernet services and other closed networks. Communications carriers providing wide-area Ethernet services can use SMF-LAN as their service platform and greatly reduce the cost of maintaining routers on customer premises and reduce the network administration costs for end users building a WAN using wide-area Ethernet.

Communications between the devices on the SMF-LAN system use IPv6, which enables centralized management of communications equipment without impacting the customer's existing IPv4 network.

Co., Ltd. will incorporate the SMF-LAN system into their managed Ethernet service, "Ether-MAN" in order to simplify the service installation process.

IIJ will continue to provide SMF to communications carriers and companies with nation-wide locations, and hopes to reach 12,000 locations during the 2005 fiscal year.

SMF-LAN Features

- Automated configuration

When connected to the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , IIJ's proprietary SEIL Series router automatically reads the configuration file and completes its own configuration. No need for users to directly configure the router.

- Configuration and feature update (push technology)

Settings and features can be distributed from the LAN-administration server to specific equipment (such as routers) at administrator-defined times.

- Proxy monitor and notification feature

This feature acts as a proxy for the monitoring system and notifies a specified monitoring server of its results.

About KVH's Ether-MAN (Wide-area Ethernet) services

KVH's Ether-MAN (Wide-area Ethernet) services create a metropolitan area network (MAN) with Ethernet technology originally developed for LANs (local area networks), and link multiple offices of corporate customers located throughout the metropolitan area as if they were on a LAN within one building.
