IHOP TO BUILD NEW RESTAURANT IN DOWNTOWN DETROIT

/ADVANCE/DETROIT, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The first national family restaurant to be constructed in downtown Detroit in 25 years was jointly announced today by Richard K. Herzer, president, chairman and CEO of International House of Pancakes, Inc. (IHOP) and Walter Bridgforth Jr., a local developer and president of the W.B.B.J. Investment Company.
The new 4,550-square-foot IHOP restaurant will have seating for 168 people and will be located at Jefferson Avenue and Chene. The interior will have a Motown memorabilia theme and the restaurant will serve a full fare of breakfast, lunch and dinner items.
Herzer and Bridgforth made the announcement at a ceremonial groundbreaking, which was held at the restaurant's site today. Construction is scheduled in the spring with the grand opening planned for mid-summer.
"We are excited to be the first new family restaurant built in Detroit in the last 25 years. Our new restaurant will provide traditional good food, good service and good value that our customers have come to expect from their neighborhood IHOP," said Herzer.
He said that IHOP has a lot to offer everyone. "The location is convenient, the prices are reasonable, there's always our familiar never-empty coffee pot on the table, and breakfast is served anytime of the day." He said IHOP features delicious lunch and dinner items, in addition to its award-winning breakfast selections.
Bridgforth said, "There is a great deal of excitement in Detroit surrounding the much-anticipated opening of this new International House of Pancakes. There are so many new residential developments in downtown Detroit that the people who live, work or visit the area deserve more options on where they can sit down, have a good meal, good service at a good price. I also believe people will come from beyond the downtown area to support this IHOP restaurant because it's less than three miles from our central business district and our main entertainment district."
IHOP develops, franchises and operates International House of Pancakes restaurants, one of America's best-known national family restaurant chains. As of Sept. 30, 1993, the company had 561 IHOP restaurants, of which 389 were operated by franchisees, 49 by the company, and 123 by area licensees. IHOP restaurants are located in 35 states, Canada and Japan. This latest IHOP joins five other IHOP restaurants in the greater metropolitan Detroit area.
