IFE REACHES AGREEMENT WITH FLEXTECH FOR SEPT. 1 LAUNCH OF THE FAMILY CHANNEL UK

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- International Family Entertainment UK Ltd. (IFE) has entered into an agreement with Flextech p.l.c., the majority shareholder of The Children's Channel (TCC). The network is scheduled to launch Sept. 1 as part of the British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) package.
Flextech p.l.c.'s involvement strengthens the channel's already favorable position in the United Kingdom's new broadcast scene and provides the British media company with a 39 percent stake in The Family Channel UK. The balance will be owned by IFE.
"After two years of exploring and testing the market and in light of our agreement to be included in the BSkyB package, we feel that this is a perfect time to launch The Family Channel UK," according to Tim Robertson, chief executive officer of International Family Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: FAM).
Commenting on IFE's announcement, Roger Luard, chief executive officer of London-based Flextech p.l.c., said, "We are delighted to be involved with one of the United States' leading and most successful basic cable networks, and we look forward to cooperating with IFE in opportunities for expansion into Europe and beyond."
In April, IFE was granted permission by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) to operate a British cable and satellite version of the popular Family Channel network, which is seen in more than 57 million homes across the United States. The ITC license cleared the way for The Family Channel to transmit from the United Kingdom via an Astra 1C transponder.
As part of the BSkyB package, The Family Channel UK will launch as the premier family entertainment network in the United Kingdom. The network's combined Family Channel, MTM and TVS libraries boast more than 2,000 hours of quality family programming that is specially tailored to provide exciting, fun-loving and heartwarming entertainment for the whole family.
Original productions are in the planning stages as well for the network's Maidstone studios. The facility will be the center for the channel's uplink, playout and management operations.
The Family Channel UK will begin broadcasting at 5 p.m., immediately following TCC's program hours. The Family Channel UK's association with TCC also will provide key opportunities for cooperation in many areas, including playout and production.
