IFA Foundation Activities Expanded Broadly in 2000.

 recently reviewed the most important things happening in the Foundation during the past year. Following are the highlights. A full report on the Foundation's programs will be published soon. The IFA Immunofluorescent assay (IFA)
A blood test sometimes used to confirm ELISA results instead of using the Western blotting. In an IFA test, HIV antigen is mixed with a fluorescent compound and then with a sample of the patient's blood.
 Educational Foundation serves as the education and research arm of the IFA.

Many IFA members and franchise leaders have stepped forward this year to build a stronger Foundation through support of a capital campaign, The Franchising Community Fund, with the goal of $2.5 million. The campaign is designed to increase the knowledge and professional standards of the franchising community through education and research. Launched at IFA's San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  convention, the campaign by December had generated over $1.8 million in pledges. A number of major donations have led the way.

Research Programs: The Profile of Franchising: Volume III was published in March of this year, and the Foundation is gearing up for two major research projects for publication in 2001. The first is a Franchise Owners Satisfaction Survey and the second is a Franchise System Profitability/Operating Ratio Study, which will allow franchise companies to compare their operating ratios Operating Ratio

A ratio that shows the efficiency of management by comparing operating expense to net sales:
 with other franchise companies in the same industry categories and across the board. The Foundation, in cooperation with the Society of Franchising members, will conduct a number of smaller-scale research projects -- (1) a study of the trends and characteristics of multi-unit franchise owners; (2) a study of the trends and characteristics of "second-generation" franchise owners; and (3) case studies of the role of franchisees in initiating changes and improvements in franchise systems.

 $200,000 for a multi-faceted program to provide training and education about franchising and the free enterprise system targeted to minorities and urban youth. A National Advisory Committee, including IFA members and representatives of a number of major national minority organizations, has been formed to launch the first phase of this project. The Foundation is also seeking additional sponsors and funding support for this program.

Franchise Minority Scholarship Program: Marriott International Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) is a worldwide operator and franchisor of a range of value and luxury hotels and related lodging facilities. Marriott currently has 2,300 accommodation properties in North America alone.  has donated $150,000 to start this program to assist people in acquiring franchise and entrepreneurial training. Additional funding partners are also being sought for this program.

Program: Enrollment in the CFE program has increased by over 50 percent in the past year, with 55 new candidates joining the program since January, bringing the total number of candidates to 163. Since January, 18 courses have been conducted with a total enrollment of 341 registrations. Twenty-four individuals will complete their course of study to receive the CFE designation at the IFA Annual Convention February 24-27.

In an important new development, Allied Domecq Allied Domecq PLC was an international company, headquartered in Bristol, UK that operated spirits, wine, and quick service restaurant businesses. History
Allied Domecq was the result of a 1994 merger between Allied Lyons and Pedro Domecq.[1].

 the "Solutions 2001" Management and Technology Conference on October 19-20 in Minneapolis, in conjunction with the University's Emerging Franchisor Conference.

The Foundation launched its first online course in March, "Practical Financial Management for Growing Business", a joint effort between Business Resource Services, IntraLearn and the Foundation. Two new courses are being planned in cooperation with IFA and IntraLearn -- a standards-based Franchise Sales Compliance Program, and Franchising Fundamentals. The course is designed for franchise executives, franchise development professionals, brokers, consultants and attorneys to help them better understand the complex laws and regulations regarding franchise sales and disclosure.

The course can be used to develop a company-wide compliance program, or to augment aug·ment

Scholarships and Grants: Each year, the Foundation awards a scholarship grant to an academic/researcher for the best applied franchising research paper. In 2000, a four-member research team received the $2000 grant, and the Foundation Board has approved an increase in the scholarship grant to $5000 for 2001.

An educational program in which students receive both classroom instruction and on-the-job training.
 Clubs of America) to sponsor the annual "Student Franchising Competition." Hundreds of high school and college students participate in the annual competition, with judging at the regional and national level. The Foundation's sponsorship includes cash awards and trophies for winning students, creation and distribution of a franchising poster to more than 5,000 schools across the U.S. and teacher support materials.

Annual Golf Tournament: The Foundation's 4th Annual Golf Classic, held following IFA's Annual Convention, raised $70,000 to support education and research programs.
