IF BERGMAN WERE A BRIT ...

Byline: Bob Strauss Film Critic

'I FAIL every test you set me but you keep setting them. Why?'' Anne Manning Anne Manning (February 17, 1807 - September 14, 1879) was a miscellaneous writer. Her best known works are Mistress Mary Powell, which first appeared in Sharpe's Magazine in 1849, and The Household of Sir Thomas More , the young wife of a well-off, well-doing London corporate lawyer, says to her husband.

He is stuffy, he does judge her in a thousand petty ways he may not even be aware of, and he loves her more than he could possibly imagine, as he'll learn to his cleansing and unbearable sorrow.

find freedom in failing moral tests and James will do many things he knows are wrong. Through those actions, both will understand and appreciate each other far better than they did in the polite, privileged life they shared at the beginning of the film. Most likely, it won't be enough to save them.

Written and directed by Julian Fellowes Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, commonly known as Julian Fellowes, (born August 17, 1949 in Cairo, Egypt) was an actor for over twenty years before winning the Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay in 2001 for Gosford Park. , the Oscar-winning screenwriter of ``Gosford Park,'' and magnificently played by Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson, ``Separate Lies'' manages to plumb Bergman-esque depths of conjugal Pertaining or relating to marriage; suitable or applicable to married people.

distress while maintaining a very English tone of behavioral restraint and martini-dry humor.

While the conflict between the Mannings is drawn from Nigel Balchin's 1951 source novel ``A Way Through the Woods,'' Fellowes has shrewdly added a crime mystery plot line that not only takes the drama out of plushly appointed parlors (figuratively, anyway; this movie is almost all talk, spoken from the cold comfort of very expensive furniture) into darker existential territory. It makes the lies spouses - and the man who comes between them, an even richer rake played with dissolute dis·so·lute

Plus, as circumstances force straighter-than-an-arrow James to bend his ethics, this rock of country home-owning rectitude's personal anguish takes on multiple shades, one more poignant than the other. Great in everything from ``The Full Monty'' to ``In the Bedroom'' to ``Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,'' Wilkinson is so good at this point he can maintain performance integrity even in self-deluded trash like ``The Exorcism exorcism (ĕk`sôrsĭz'əm), ritual act of driving out evil demons or spirits from places, persons, or things in which they are thought to dwell.  reference to James Mason in the movie, and this other James is the closest that Wilkinson has yet come to matching the wrecked grandeur that was the all-time great British screen actor's specialty.

As for Fellowes, his feel for upper-class manners makes even the stodgiest exchanges ring true, and his instinct for just the right touch of wicked character humor lends the piece more vibrance than it has any right to. Some may still find ``Separate Lies'' a bit on the dull side. Too bad for them. A precise exam of the human condition such as this is the greatest of cinematic pleasures.
