(Integrated Device Technology IDT (NASDAQ: IDTI) was founded in 1980 as a semiconductor vendor. Employing approximately 2500 people worldwide, headquartered in San Jose, California and operating a fab in Hillsboro, Oregon, the company both designs and fabricates semiconductor components. , Inc.)(Nasdaq:IDTI IDTI Integrated Device Technology Inc ), a leading communications IC provider, today expanded its telecommunications product portfolio with the introduction of three new products that address the T1/E1/J1 transport requirements commonly found in central office (CO) enterprise and carrier-class equipment applications, including voice gateways, multi-service access switches, soft switches, add-drop multiplexers (ADM See add/drop multiplexer.

IDT's octal A numbering system that uses eight digits. It is used as a shorthand method for representing binary characters that use six-bits. Each three bits (half a character) is converted into a single octal digit. Okta is Greek for 8.  T1/E1/J1 framer, T1/E1 octal line interface unit (LIU LIU Linköpings Universitet (Sweden)

), and dedicated E1 octal LIU provide up to eight independent physical layer interfaces and support all telephony connectivity requirements to Class 5 CO switches. When used together, IDT's framer and LIU chip set provides a high-density, cost-effective solution for T1/E1/J1 port cards designed to connect voice and media gateways to Class 5 PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) The worldwide voice telephone network. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S.  switches in the CO.

switches and octal CODECs. In addition to the transport products announced today, IDT also intends to offer synchronization transport products in the first quarter of next year. These WAN PLLs target applications that require an independent clock for driving high-density TSI switches. IDT will also address designers' needs for protocol control with the introduction of a family of HDLC (High-level Data Link Control) A data link protocol from ISO for point-to-point communications over serial links. Derived from IBM's SDLC protocol, HDLC has been the basis for numerous protocols including X.25, ISDN, T1, SS7, GSM, CDPD, PPP and others.  controller products in the next six months. By delivering solutions for each of the four categories of telecommunications ICs, as well as a broad family of integrated communications processors, IDT uniquely provides a comprehensive portfolio of communications ICs designed to support emerging classes of voice-over-packet equipment.

As a proof point of this strategy, a standalone evaluation board, which includes IDT's octal framer, octal LIU and processor, will be offered to customers in CYQ CYQ Central YMCA Qualifications 102. This board, in conjunction with the accompanying software drivers, enables designers to accelerate time to market and serves as a reference design for T1/E1/J1 line card solutions.

"These products demonstrate how IDT has leveraged its digital design proficiency with an emerging strength in analog and mixed signal design to develop voice-oriented products targeting next-generation carrier-class equipment," said Mario Montana, director of IDT's telecommunications products division. "IDT is one of the few companies able to provide both the octal LIU and framer as a complete chip set, in addition to having the capacity to deliver a broad, complete telecommunications product portfolio in the areas of switching, voice processing, transport and protocol control to address the convergence of voice and data in the global network."

IDT Octal Framer and Octal LIU Offer Enhanced Features and Superior Value

The octal framer supports T1, E1, and J1 framing formats and provides a system interface to support 2-, 4- or 8-Mbit/s pulse code modulation pulse code modulation: see modulation.

) highways in industry-standard formats, such as H-MVIP, MVIP (MultiVendor Integration Protocol) A voice bus and switching protocol developed by Natural Microsystems, Natick, MA, and others. Used to build call center equipment using regular PCs, MVIP provides a second communications bus within the computer that can , ST-Bus, GCI-bus and CHI-bus, to allow a seamless connection to TSI switches, HDLC controllers or system ASICs. The octal framer features three on-chip HDLC controllers per channel that can be used to implement full GR-303 or V5.2 layer 2 connectivity requirements for Class 5 CO switches. The device enables the generation, detection and loopback of signal patterns typically used in system and transmission line diagnostics simplifying system status, control, and maintenance functionality. The octal framer also supports all global standards for frame formatting, jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle  attenuation Loss of signal power in a transmission.
Attenuation

The reduction in level of a transmitted quantity as a function of a parameter, usually distance. It is applied mainly to acoustic or electromagnetic waves and is expressed as the ratio of power densities.
 and error testing.

The octal T1/E1 LIU and the dedicated octal E1 LIU integrate clock and data recovery, short-haul line drivers and receivers, jitter attenuators, and enhanced diagnostic tools on-chip. The devices' non-intrusive monitoring function supports G.772 standards and enables system redundancy to be added without additional external components or logic. The LIUs' extended receiver sensitivity, which allows up to 20dB loop attenuation, provides a higher margin for signal recovery in short-haul loops, typically found in CO environments.

Pricing and Availability

IDT's octal LIUs are currently sampling with production quantities available in Q1CY02. The octal framer will sample in Q1CY02 with production quantities available in Q2CY02. Volume pricing of the octal LIU devices starts at $14.79 in 10,000-unit quantities, and $35.80 for the octal framer in 10,000-unit quantities. Additional product information can be found on IDT's Web site at www.idt.com/products/telecom.html.
