: IDTI IDTI Integrated Device Technology Inc ) Tuesday announced it has begun sampling of its new IDT WinChip 2(TM) and WinChip 2 3D(TM) processors for value desktop and notebook computer systems.

IDT's newest processors are optimized to deliver the best computing experience for users running business applications and games on sub-$1,000 desktop and sub-$1,500 notebook computer systems. The IDT WinChip 2 and WinChip 2 3D will be available in volume later this year, at which time further product details will be available.

"IDT s goal is to deliver best-in-class products for the value computing segment," said Len Perham, IDT's president and chief executive officer. "This marks a milestone in our strategy to use core IDT WinChip technology as a foundation for developing a family of processor products designed specifically to meet the quality, compatibility and price/performance needs of the value PC segment."

Enhancing Value PC Performance Using Open Standards

Based on Winstone(R) 98 Benchmarks, the IDT WinChip 2 and WinChip 2 3D will offer best-in-class performance vs. other Socket 7 processors running at the same MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. . Samples will initially be available at speeds running as high as 266 MHz, moving to 300 MHz later this year.

(TM) capability, a fully pipelined floating point unit and 100-MHz bus support.

The IDT WinChip 2 family will support Super 7(TM) motherboards, providing the same benefits as the Pentium II(R) architecture for uni-processor systems. The release of multiple core logic chip sets with 100-MHz bus support will ensure that users can continue to leverage the cost-effective and established Socket 7 motherboard infrastructure.

As a result, IDT WinChip 2 PCs will offer better performance for business, MMX and floating-point applications. For home users, the IDT WinChip 2 3D will deliver today's best value PC-level multimedia performance for applications such as gaming, photo editing and education. The IDT WinChip 2 3D incorporates AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  3DNow!(TM) technology, which accelerates games and applications written to Microsoft's Direct3D(R) application programming interface (API).

"Our goal is to leverage the established and cost-effective Socket 7 industry infrastructure," said Glenn Henry, senior vice president of IDT and president of Centaur Technology, IDT's design subsidiary. "By maintaining Socket 7, we re providing OEMs with an open, flexible infrastructure and helping them avoid costly, proprietary solutions. Most importantly, we re delivering better price/performance than comparable Pentium II processors."

"The simplicity of our architecture and core enables us to introduce new architectural features such as 3D enhancements, 100-MHz bus support, superscalar execution units and other new technology," said Henry.

Socket 7 compatibility and support, for both the latest as well as older motherboards, makes the IDT WinChip 2 family the best processor for users looking to upgrade their existing PC. The IDT WinChip 2 will also support split power supplies.

Availability

The IDT WinChip 2 and WinChip 2 3D will be available in volume later this year, at which time further details will be available. IDT will be previewing the IDT WinChip 2 3D at the Computex tradeshow in Taipei, Taiwan starting June 2, 1998.

Production

The IDT WinChip 2 and WinChip 2 3D will be produced using both 0.35 and 0.25-micron process technology, which enables high-volume manufacturing of processors to supply a broader base of users. IDT is an industry leader in 0.25-micron process technology and will be producing all of its IDT WinChip microprocessors using this process by the end of 1998.

To meet demand, IDT is ramping 8-inch wafer production at its Oregon facility and has signed a foundry agreement with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , who will use its 0.25-micron, 2.5-volt IBM Blue Logic(TM) technology to manufacture IDT WinChip 2 microprocessors.

About the IDT WinChip Family

The IDT WinChip processor family is optimized to deliver the best computing experience for users running business applications and games on sub-$1,000 desktop and sub-$1,500 notebook computer systems.

IDT introduced the first of its IDT WinChip microprocessors, the IDT WinChip C6(TM), in May 1997. Its small die size and low power are achieved by simplifying the architecture and eliminating or reducing complex logic found in other processors. The microprocessor is offered in a 296-pin Ceramic Pin Grid Array (hardware, processor) Ceramic Pin Grid Array - (CPGA) A form of Pin Grid Array package used by Cyrix III processors.
