microprocessors, today announced that its RV4640(TM) MIPS RISC microprocessor powers VideoSurfer's TV-TOP(TM) digital set-top box that allows consumers to access interactive online services using their televisions.

"We chose IDT's RV4640 processor for the advanced DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  capabilities it provides, along with its unbeatable price/performance levels," said David Weisman, VideoSurfer's chief executive officer. "These microprocessor features enable high-quality graphics, true digital video and videoconferencing capabilities with lower system costs for consumers."

VideoSurfer's TV-TOP box offers Internet access, video conferencing and data sharing features to improve the efficiency of working from a home office. The consumer can use a telephone line or an ISDN ISDN

"The multimedia market is exploding with the rapidly increasing number of consumers using digital devices for Internet access, home shopping and e-mail. IDT's expertise in the multimedia and communications markets position the company as a key participant in this information revolution," said Jean-Charles Bouzigues, IDT's RISC microprocessor consumer market marketing manager. "IDT plans to continue driving a succession of leading-edge, high-performance digital solutions for this expanding market."

The recently enhanced 3.3-volt IDT RV4640 operates at 180 MHz and achieves more than 235 dhrystone mips performance and 90 million multiply/accumulate (MAC) operations per second. The processor combines a true internal 64-bit execution core with a 32-bit bus interface and supports greater than 260-MBps bandwidth to help achieve the lowest possible system cost. Many of the platform's functions, such as audio and video decoding, are handled in software rather than hardware, providing additional cost savings and greater flexibility.

VideoSurfer Ltd., a private Israeli-based company, applies expertise in video, telephony, ISDN and ADSL See DSL.

The company was established in 1996 in order to meet a growing demand in the consumer and SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent.  markets for audio/video Internet and point-to-point communication products.

IDT's World-Class RISC Microprocessor Family

The RV4640 is an important member of IDT's widely used 32/64-bit RISC microprocessor family based on the MIPS instruction set. Offering a wide range of software-compatible, performance/price choices, IDT has optimized the designs of its high-performance microprocessors for use in an assortment of embedded applications, including internetworking, multimedia, data communications and telecommunications products. Superior performance/price, low power consumption and small form factor have made the IDT RISC family of microprocessors the standard for a number of digital consumer products for leading companies. This consumer market penetration shows the strength of IDT processor families to power applications related to home appliances, particularly those that are benefited by their multimedia extensions.

Pricing and Availability
