IDLEMAN DECLINES RE-ELECTION RUN COUNCILWOMAN SAW GOALS MET.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - City Councilwoman Michelle Idleman announced Friday that she will not seek re-election, saying she had accomplished most of what she had set out to accomplish during her four-year term and that she wanted more time with her family.

In announcing her decision, Idleman recounted highlights of her term in office, including major crime sweeps such as Operation Men in Black; the apartment construction moratorium A suspension of activity or an authorized period of delay or waiting. A moratorium is sometimes agreed upon by the interested parties, or it may be authorized or imposed by operation of law. ; and the attraction of Countrywide coun·try·wide

said. ``She was a great council person. She will be missed.''

The immediate impact of Idleman's decision is that it will stretch the filing period for the April 9 council race by five days. Candidates for the council will now have until Jan. 16 to file. The other incumbents, Mayor Frank Roberts and Vice Mayor Henry Hearns are running for re-election.

Also in the race for Hearns and Idleman's council seats are Ed Sileo and Steve Malicott. Candidates for the mayoral post include Norm Hickling, Anthony Booth, William Booth, William, 1829–1912, English religious leader, founder and first general of the Salvation Army, b. Nottingham. Originally a local preacher for the Wesleyan Methodists, he went (1849) to London and entered (1852) the ministry of the Methodist New Connexion  Fender and Gene Gaynor.

The filing extension applies only to the two council seats and not to the mayoral race.

Idleman, 34, was elected to the City Council in April 1998 along with Councilman Andy Visokey.

Idleman and Visokey, who have similar political philosophies as the rest of the council, took the seats formerly held by Michael Singer and Deborah Shelton Deborah Shelton (born November 21, 1948) is an American beauty queen and actress.

Shelton first won the Miss Virginia USA title and was subsequently crowned Miss USA in May 1970.
, who had been on the losing end of a number of 3-2 votes over major redevelopment agency projects.

Idleman's main campaign platform issues during her 1998 election run were crime and the number of apartment complex developments in the city. During her tenure on the council, the city had a number of major anti-crime operations, including the two Men in Black undercover operations that snared thieves and drug dealers.

The city also imposed a two-year moratorium on apartment construction while an evaluation was conducted of how much land was zoned for such developments and the anticipated demand. The moratorium was followed by a series of rezoning actions to reduce the amount of land available for apartment construction.
