Arizona State had one chance to defeat UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

on Thursday night, and that was to make the game as ugly as possible.

accomplished half their mission. It was indeed a turnover-plagued, rhythmless, 40-minute mess at the University Activity Center, but the Bruins survived with an 87-73 victory that improved their Pacific-10 record to 5-0 entering Saturday's showdown at Arizona.

The game was notable for UCLA freshman Jelani McCoy's career-high 21 points against the Sun Devils' tiny frontline.

"I want us to be the kind of team that has somebody different each night," Bruins coach Jim Harrick Jim Harrick (born July 25, 1938 in Charleston, West Virginia) is a former college basketball head coach who coached at Pepperdine University, UCLA, the University of Rhode Island and the University of Georgia.  said of his team's scoring balance. "It was Kris Johnson Saturday, it was McCoy tonight."

Bruins forward Charles O'Bannon Charles Edward O'Bannon (born February 22 1975 in Lakewood, California) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins, where he was a star small forward/shooting guard, and a starter on the school's 1995 NCAA Championship team.  was assessed his third technical in two weeks - for taunting - which landed him on the bench for the final 16 minutes as punishment.

"I don't want that anymore, I've had enough," Harrick said.

The first half was comptitive for a few minuts and then the Bruins took command. Their 20-5 surge began with a McCoy dunk, but it shifted into high gear when Cameron Dollar and omm'A Givens entered.

Givens quickly grabbed a deflection and hit a layup. A minute later Dollar drove the lane, drew two defenders to him, then dropped a pass for McCoy, who thunder dunked.

Joe Zalatel took what would have been an ill-advised 3-pointer for any team except the Sun Devils.

It clanked, then Dollar nailed a baseline jumper. UCLA's lead reached double digits Double Digits was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right.  pass from Dollar and hit a short jumper.

Before departing, Givens hit two free throws and Dollar teamed with J.R. Henderson for a dunk. Henderson then increased the lead to 14 with a three-point play, and the margin eventually grew to 17.

But the Bruins snoozed through the final minutes, allowing the Sun Devils to rally. Jeremy Veal and Ron Riley hit back-to-back 3-pointers - Riley's coming with seconds remaining - and the Bruins' halftime lead was only nine.

Arizona State maintained a shred of momentum early in the second half. After O'Bannon's technical, Veal hit two free throws and then a jumper. The four points drew Arizona State within 49-41 and excited what had been a mildly complacent crowd.

A Toby Bailey John Garfield "Toby" Bailey (born November 19 1975 in Los Angeles, California, United States) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball at UCLA and was one of the stars of their 1995 National Championship team.  jumper slowed the Sun Devils for a second - until reserve freshman Duane Davis buried a 3-pointer from the left wing. And at that moment, the Bruins seemed headed for trouble.

But Bailey answered with a 3-pointer, then a Dollar steal turned into a McCoy dunk, and suddenly the crowd was silent. Bailey found McCoy for a layup, then took a pass from Dollar and dunked powerfully. The Bruins' lead was back to 17.

Arizona State had one surge left. With the help of several UCLA turnovers, the Sun Devils scored eight straight. The Bruins' next six points came from the foul line foul line
