IDB MOBILE, CABLE & WIRELESS, HONG KONG TELECOM, TELEGLOBE CANADA AND MORSVIAZSPUTNIK INTRODUCE PROJECT CONDO

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- IDB MOBILE Communications Inc., a joint venture of IDB Communications Group Inc. (NASDAQ: IDBX) and Teleglobe International of Canada, today announced that its board of directors has approved Project Condominium, a cooperative venture with Cable & Wireless, Hong Kong Telecom, Teleglobe Canada, and Morsviazsputnik, that enables IDB MOBILE to enter INMARSAT's next generation of digital services, called INMARSAT B&M.
The five carriers are building two dual earth stations, one in Hong Kong and one in Laurentides, Canada. The Hong Kong earth station will serve the Pacific Ocean Region (POR) and Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the Canadian earth station at Laurentides will serve the Atlantic East and West Ocean Regions.
Under Project Condo, the earth stations will offer access to other carriers under multi-identification numbers and will be linked by dedicated circuits, enabling customers to access any of the four ocean regions from a convenient single point.
"The truly unique aspect of Project Condominium is that the earth stations will have the ability to accommodate up to 10 signatories and/or INMARSAT service providers by allowing them to place their own land earth station ID number in the earth station," said Jon Klein, president of IDB MOBILE. "As a tenant in Project Condo, the operator will have his own virtual earth station with a full range of services while investing less than 10 percent of the cost he would face if he built his own station."
IDB MOBILE's Staten Island, N.Y., and Niles Canyon, Calif., facilities will be linked to the Laurentides earth station, and will provide operator assistance and other enhanced services such as credit card and debit card calls and customized billing in all four ocean regions. Morsviazsputnik will also install a new switch in Moscow that will be linked to Laurentides providing gateway services for mobile customers in Russia and the CIS.
INMARSAT A, which is INMARSAT's traditional analog service that has served the maritime and land mobile industries for more than a decade, will eventually be replaced by INMARSAT B, a new full-service offering for voice, telex and high-speed data communications. Voice quality is a clear 9600 bps, and high-speed 56/64 kbps data options are also offered. Cost of INMARSAT B service will be substantially lower than INMARSAT A.
INMARSAT M is a new digital mobile service offering of voice, low- speed fax and data communications that is aimed at the land mobile and maritime markets where its smaller antenna size and lower equipment price will enable it to reach the previously unserved elements of the yacht and fishing markets.
