IDB COMPLETES PACIFIC RIM EARTH STATIONS PROJECTS; STATION FACILITATES FIRST DIRECT TELEPHONE LINKS BETWEEN SOUTH KOREA & CHINA

LOS ANGELES, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- IDB Communications Group Inc. (NASDAQ: IDBX) announced that IDB Systems, the unit of the company that provides expert engineering, design and integration of satellite earth station facilities, has completed the installation of earth stations in the People's Republic of China, South Korea and the Philippines.
The nine-meter earth station in the People's Republic of China is the first Ku-Band international earth station for telephony in that region. This facility is currently providing 30 voice channels between South Korea and the People's Republic of China and is located in the coastal city of Weihai in the Shandong province of China.
IDB Systems' engineers and technicians have been in Weihai since February 1993, installing the state-of-the-art earth station system. The system includes IDB's monitor and control system, MACS 50. The earth station operates on the Intelsat satellite system.
The contract for the earth station, valued at over $1 million, was signed in Beijing in September 1992, the same week that South Korea and China announced the normalization of relations between the two countries.
IDB SYSTEMS has also recently completed the installation of the first C-Band earth station for digital service operating on the TDRSS satellite in South Korea.
This 11-meter earth station will provide digital data service between South Korea and several countries. The earth station is located 80 miles south of Seoul in the city of Pyung Taek. IDB SYSTEMS engineers and technicians have been installing the system since early April 1993. Commencement of the service is scheduled for July 1, 1993. The custom-designed system includes IDB's monitor and control system, MACS 50.
The contract for the earth station, valued at over $1 million, was signed in Seoul in January, 1993.
IDB SYSTEMS also announced that it has completed building the first C-Band digital compressed video transportable earth station in the Philippines.
The 3.8-meter transportable system will be utilized as a satellite news gathering vehicle for the largest television broadcaster in the Philippines, ABS/CBN Broadcasting Corp. The transportable unit incorporates digital compression equipment that allows several channels, rather than just one, to share an individual satellite transponder. The transportable earth station will be used to access the Palapa B2P satellite and will begin operation July 1, 1993.
The contract for the transportable, valued at $400,000, was signed in Manila in March, 1993.
"IDB is proud to have provided these facilities to China, the Philippines and South Korea. These efforts are the continuation of IDB SYSTEMS expansion in the Far East," said John Ahrens, vice president of Sales and Marketing of IDB SYSTEMS. "Our focus in this region continues to pay off with new relationships thus enabling us to provide services to meet our customers' ever-changing needs."
