In an effort to cut underage drinking, all Tennesseans must now show identification before buying beer in stores, no matter how old they are. Tennessee is the first state to make this universal requirement. "I'll be very pleased when I'm carded," Governor Phil Bredesen, 63, told the Associated Press, "and in my mind I'll just imagine it's because I look so young." Beer sellers face fines of up to $1,000 for each under-age sale. Three violations could mean a suspended or revoked license. The law does not apply to beer sales in bars and restaurants, and it does not cover wine and liquor. The law will expire after one year unless the Legislature renews it.
