Relief of sorts is expected Thursday, when low temperatures will creep back into the mid-50s under mostly cloudy skies, bringing a chance of rain.

Northeast winds on Tuesday buffeted Cheeseboro Canyon with gusts reaching 53 mph, officials said.

While no records were set Tuesday, Lancaster residents shivered through a low of 24 degrees - only 2 degrees colder than the low atop Mount Wilson, where the high was only 37 degrees.

Officials reminded residents that colder weather means bringing pets indoors and looking after tropical and other warm-weather plants.

As for the old grapefruit tree in the back yard, don't worry.

``The big ones probably won't get hurt. It's the young trees that are tender and would get hurt,'' manifested by browning leaves, Tyler said.

The cold weather and high winds made the beach a tricky place for recreation, warned Los Angeles County lifeguard Capt. Dan Atkins of the Malibu-Zuma lifeguard station.
