ICONIX Releases `Advanced CORBA,' Volume III of the Complete CORBA CBT series.Business & Technology Editors SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 29, 2000 ICONIX Software Engineering Inc., a leader in object-oriented technology, announced the release of "Advanced CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global ," the third volume of the multimedia tutorial series "Complete CORBA." This volume covers a large number of advanced CORBA topics such as: the Interface Repository, the Dynamic Interfaces and ORB Interoperability. Volume I (released in November 1998), titled "Introduction to CORBA," provided the user with a background look into the goals and evolution of the CORBA standard, as well as a high-level look at the CORBA architecture. Volume II took the user inside the CORBA architecture and examined the details of Interface Definition Language See IDL. Interface Definition Language - (IDL) 1. An OSF standard for defining RPC stubs. 2. Part of an effort by Project DOE at SunSoft, Inc. to integrate distributed object technology into the Solaris operating system. (IDL (1) (Interface Definition Language) A language used to describe the interface to a routine or function. For example, objects in the CORBA distributed object environment are defined by an IDL, which describes the services performed by the object and how the data ), the ORB Core and Object Adapters. Details of the Interface Repository are provided on Volume III including: in-depth descriptions of the 22 interfaces, an explanation of the IR Containment Hierarchy, as well as IR Inheritance Hierarchy. The five abstract interfaces are covered, as well as the 17 concrete interfaces. Both the Dynamic Invocation and the Dynamic Skeleton Interfaces are discussed. Java source code examples are hyperlinked to the tutorial, illustrating the usage of many of the interfaces. Finally, ORB Interoperability is discussed, including the importance of IOR IOR Indian Ocean Region IOR Improved Oil Recovery IOR Interoperable Object Reference IOR Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli (Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Italy) IoR Institute of Refrigeration (UK) and GIOP (General Inter-Orb Protocol) The protocol used by CORBA to communicate between ORBs. GIOP defines the messages and format that are passed over the ORB between the client and the object. , and the mappings to IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) The CORBA message protocol used on a TCP/IP network (Internet, intranet, etc.). CORBA is the industry standard for distributed objects, which allows programs (objects) to be run remotely in a network. and ESIOPs.
