 ICI PHARMACEUTICALS GROUP DONATES ANTISEPTICS
 TO HURRICANE ANDREW RELIEF EFFORT
WILMINGTON, Del., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of the effort to protect the health of people in South Florida who are recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew, ICI Pharmaceuticals Group today announced a donation of all uncommitted supplies of HIBICLENS (R) (chlorhexidine gluconate) and HIBISTAT (R) (chlorhexidine gluconate) antiseptics to the Dade County area. This situation has created an urgent demand in hospitals for an effective antiseptic to prevent the spread of infection.
HIBICLENS and HIBISTAT, which are the most widely used antiseptics in hospitals worldwide, have a variety of uses as surgical skin cleansers and contribute to a reduction in nosocomial, or hospital- acquired infections. The total donation will include 30,000 bottles of HIBISTAT 4 oz. liquid, 8,000 bottles of HIBISTAT 8 oz. liquid, 100,000 HIBISTAT towelettes, and 50,000 HIBICLENS liquid sponge brushes.
"Preventing the spread of infection is crucial in a crisis situation like this," said Robert C. Black, president of ICI Pharmaceuticals Group. "ICI is pleased to have the opportunity to assist the health care professionals in Florida meet this objective through the donation of its products."
AmeriCares, the Connecticut-based national and international relief agency, will distribute the ICI products. The agency, which delivered thousands of pounds of relief supplies victims of Hurricane Hugo and the Los Angeles riots, will dispense the supplies to the emergency field hospitals, set up by HUMANA after the hurricane's aftermath, that are in the greatest need of the antiseptics. Today, the supplies were loaded on a Florida-bound truck donated by Parker's Express trucking company of Hockessin, Del., which is also providing a driver.
"ICI selected AmeriCares because of the agency's experience with relief efforts, its nationwide system of warehousing centers and distribution network, and its reputation for accountability," said AmeriCares Executive Vice-President Peter L. Keating. "As an organization committed to providing immediate response to emergency medical needs, we are proud to help execute ICI's much needed donation."
In addition to donating relief supplies, ICI is contributing to the effort by encouraging sales force members in the area to donate their services. Also, the company has been working with Florida pharmaceutical authorities to ensure that ICI products will be immediately available and dispensable from pharmacies damaged by the storm once these stores are able to resume operation.
ICI Pharmaceuticals Group is a Wilmington-based business unit of ICI Americas Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of the United Kingdom-based ICI PLC (ICI), one of the world's largest chemical companies. ICI has demonstrated its pledge to corporate responsibility by initiating campaigns to help the general public.
