ICI'S PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY TAKES ROOT IN JAPAN

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 26 ~PRNewswire~ -- ICI Seeds, a global business group of U.K.-based Imperial Chemical Industries PLC (NYSE: ICI), and Kagome of Japan announced today that Kagome will begin large-scale greenhouse studies and continue its evaluation of ICI's biotechnology, developed to improve the quality of tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables.
Kagome, a household name in Japan, is recognized as a leading producer of food and food products, with a long history of research. ICI, one of the world's leading science-based companies, announced in July it had signed a similar collaboration agreement in the United States with Hunt-Wesson Inc. to develop processed tomato products using biotechnology.
Laboratory studies completed over the past few years convinced Kagome of the safety and basic value of ICI's technology. It is now proceeding to the greenhouse studies, which will be conducted within the Japanese government's regulations for research involving genetically modified plants. Kagome's goal is to continue the development of improved fruits and vegetables toward fully tested commercial products for the Japanese markets.
Simon Best, ICI Seeds' business manager for fruit and vegetable technology, said, "We are pleased to be working with this well-known company, which has a long history of research. With our U.S., European and Japanese collaborations, this means that our technology is being used in major markets. Our efforts have reached farther than that of any company carrying out similar biotechnology research and development."
ICI Seeds in the United States is a business unit of ICI Americas Inc., which is the U.S. operating unit of Imperial Chemical Industries PLC (ICI). Based in London, ICI is one of the world's leading chemical companies, with manufacturing operations in nearly 40 countries and annual sales of approximately $23 billion. In North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, ICI employs about 25,000 people and has annual sales of more than $6 billion.
