ICE STATION TO HOST TOURNAMENT.Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News VALENCIA -- The unofficial end of summer marks the beginning of the 2006-07 Ice Station Valencia travel hockey season. Starting Aug. 31, more than 40 teams from as far as Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern and Phoenix will arrive for the Ice Station's sixth annual five-day Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894. tournament. The tournament has a festival-type atmosphere, coming at a time of the year when camaraderie is emphasized more than winning, said Larry Bruyere, the Ice Station's director of hockey operations. Most travel teams won't be fully formed until later this month. The tournament will be competitive, however, with trophies awarded to the top two teams in each age division, and a banner given to the champion. ``It's more of a warm-up tournament to see what everyone's got,'' Bruyere said. ``A lot of these festival-type tournaments don't even offer trophies, but we do because we think it gives players something to play for.'' Teams representing all sanctioned youth hockey levels (AA, A and B) and ages (8 and under Mites to 18 and under Midgets) will compete in the tournament, which concludes Sept. 4. The WSHL WSHL Western States Hockey League all-stars will compete against top-level Junior B leagues from across the continent in a Nov. 6-8 jamboree in Blaine, Minn. The more advanced Junior A all-stars will compete at the same site on the same days. The exposure-oriented all-star jamborees, which are typically held in the winter, were moved up to accommodate NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there and NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association scouts, Bruyere said. In-house: Ice Station in-house hockey league registration for the 2006-07 season will begin Aug. 15 for all divisions.
