ICE RIVALRY STAYS COOL; HOSTILITY LACKING WHEN KINGS PLAY DUCKS.

Byline: Michael Rosenthal Daily News Staff Writer

When Kings coach Larry Robinson For U.S. basketball player, see Larry Robinson (basketball).

Larry Clark Robinson (born June 2 1951, in Winchester, Ontario, Canada) was a star player and a coach in the National Hockey League. He is currently an assistant coach of the New Jersey Devils.
played for Montreal, he would get ``sick to my stomach with nerves'' before the Canadiens played the old Quebec Nordiques The Quebec Nordiques (French: Nordiques de Québec, pronounced [nɔʀ.dɪk] .

Kings center Ray Ferraro Raymond Ferraro (born August 23, 1964 in Trail, British Columbia, Canada) is a retired professional hockey player for the NHL. He played for the Hartford Whalers (1984-1991), New York Islanders (1991-1995), New York Rangers (1995-1996), Los Angeles Kings (1996-1999), Atlanta , who played for both the New York Rangers The New York Rangers are a professional ice hockey team based in New York, New York, U.S.A. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).  and New York Islanders The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in Uniondale, a hamlet located on Long Island in Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, United States. , said meetings between those teams were ``unbelievably intense.''

So how does the Kings-Mighty Ducks rivalry stack up?

It doesn't - and won't until the day the teams meet in a playoff series, Robinson and players on both teams agreed.

``You can talk about rivalry all you want. It's not the same,'' Ferraro said. ``Just because you're in close proximity doesn't mean you have a rivalry. It will build into one when we finally play them in a playoff series. That pushes a rivalry way ahead.''

Robinson and the players, even Ferraro, agreed that a game against the Ducks is somewhat different from other games. There are the obvious differences.

While proximity might not play a significant role, it does have some impact. Media exposure increases when the teams meet, the crowds are larger because visiting fans make the trip across town and natural pride swells when two teams from the same town meet, all of which raises the intensity level.

Warren Rychel Warren Stanley Rychel (born May 12, 1967 in Tecumseh, Ontario) is a former professional ice hockey Left winger who played eight seasons in the National Hockey League.

Rychel was primarily an enforcer, and thus drew 1,422 career penalty minutes and did not score many goals.

1993, and he doesn't believe the energy level has waned. And the fact the 1996-97 Ducks - in only their fourth season - qualified for the playoffs and made a good showing while the Kings missed the postseason for a fourth straight year doesn't sit well with the L.A. players.

While the media drooled all over Paul Kariya Paul Tetsuhiko Kariya (born October 16, 1974 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), is a professional ice hockey player who plays for the St. Louis Blues. Personal life , Teemu Selanne and the rest, the Kings watched on TV and stewed stewed

.

``That's all we heard for how many months, how many years,'' Robinson said. ``You get tired of hearing about your cross-town rival, how big they are, Kariya this and Selanne that. That's one way rivalries are built.''

This season, the fact the teams are battling for playoff spots in the Western Conference - the Kings are in fifth place, the Ducks in ninth, twelve points behind L.A. - has injected added incentive into the equation regardless of geography.

As a result, head-to-head competition between the Kings and Ducks (six games) will be a significant factor.

``It's an intense rivalry now because it's going to come down probably to us and them for a playoff spot eventually. Every game's important with these guys,'' Rychel said.

However, as Robinson and Ferraro pointed out, something is missing.

The Kings had - the past tense past tense

And what they all have in common is this: The Kings faced each in multiple playoff series over the years. Edmonton in seven series since 1982, Calgary four times since '88 and Vancouver three times since '82.

The drama and emotion of the postseason carries over into following seasons, for players, coaches, fans and anyone else connected to the teams. For the Kings, even regular-season games were more interesting against these opponents for years.

In Quebec, Robinson said, it started on the ice and spread to the newspapers, where it became a war of words and inflamed the passions of fans. And in New York New York, state, United States

have faced each other in eight playoff series, a victory or two over the rival team could make a season.

``In the playoffs, the stakes are higher,'' Ferraro said. ``You could play seven games in 14 days against the same people. You don't like anything about them by the time the series is over. And it seems to carry over to the next season.''

It seems the New York rivalry will never die: The hatred for one another is a permanent part of the landscape. Not so for the Kings and their most-hated opponents from the playoffs. The fervor of the Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver matchups has waned along with the fortunes of the team.
