ICE AND SNOW HINDER MAIL COLLECTIONS

NEW YORK, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Due to heavy snow and ice remaining from Saturday's blizzard, access has been blocked to many postal collection boxes throughout New York City, Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey.
Although the door and flap to deposit mail into the blue collection box may be in working order, Postal Service carriers are unable to open the lower front panel to retrieve mail from many of the boxes. In some cases, the doors are frozen shut. In other instances, piles of frozen snow are obstructing access to the panel.
Postal customers are asked not to deposit mail into collection or Express Mail boxes that are obviously obstructed by snow and ice. Instead, customers may give their mail to any letter carrier or deposit it at a local post office. Depositing mail in a collection box obscured by snow may cause unnecessary delays.
The public is also reminded to keep steps and walkways clear of ice and snow for continued safe, efficient delivery by their letter carrier.
