, the Inter-Science Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (print-ISSN 0066-4804, CODEN AMACCQ; canceled ISSN 0074-9923, canceled CODEN AACHAX) is an academic journal published by the American Society for Microbiology. , was held this year in San Diego, September 27-30. This annual conference focuses mainly on the development of new antibiotics and antivirals. On October 11 HIVandHepatitis.com published a review of the HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. Some of the topics:

* Atazanavir, an experimental protease inhibitor being developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb, was compared in a large international trial with efavirenz efavirenz /ef·a·vi·renz/ (ef´ah-vi?renz) an antiretroviral, inhibiting reverse transcriptase; used in the treatment of HIV infection.

* 3TC (Epivir) was successfully dosed for once-daily use;

* Coviracil, an experimental nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor, was compared with d4T; and

* For certain advanced patients, a combination of amprenavir (Agenerase) and lopinavir plus ritonavir ritonavir /ri·to·na·vir/ (ri-to´nah-vir) an HIV protease inhibitor used in treatment of HIV infection and AIDS.

 (Kaletra), with some extra ritonavir (Norvir) added to overcome an interaction that would reduce the levels the other two drugs, appeared to work well.

All of these trials showed promising results that may improve HIV treatment in the future.
