Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2002

IBackup (http://www.ibackup.com), a division of Pro Softnet Corp., has released IBackup for Linux, an advanced backup application for the Linux Platform to augment its rich set of applications for web-based online storage and retrieval. IBackup is the only service that serves a complete line of web-based secure storage solutions featuring general-purpose storage functions to specialized backup functions for a wide variety of platforms.

IBackup for Linux is a suite of backup/restore applications/utilities that is native to the Redhat Linux (7.x) operating platform. It consists of backup and restores engines.

This application provides for a convenient off-site backup of critical Linux server data using standard 128-bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) The leading security protocol on the Internet. Developed by Netscape, SSL is widely used to do two things: to validate the identity of a Web site and to create an encrypted connection for sending credit card and other personal data.  Encryption The reversible transformation of data from the original (the plaintext) to a difficult-to-interpret format (the ciphertext) as a mechanism for protecting its confidentiality, integrity and sometimes its authenticity. Encryption uses an encryption algorithm and one or more encryption keys.  cryptography for transmission of all data, and features incremental backups See backup types.

, compression, replicating directory hierarchy for both backup jobs and restores.

It uses the Internet medium for transmission of data from user's local Linux machine to the remote IBackup account/space. This data goes in 128-bit encrypted en·crypt

form. So, it is a very secure medium for transmission of data -- be it backup or restore. The IBackup for Linux suite of applications are command line utilities that have a similar interface as any other generic Linux utility. It is available in the tarball format for download.

"Release of the IBackup for Linux was critical to address the growing needs for an advanced and cost-effective online backup Using the Web to store copies of data for backup. There are numerous providers on the Internet that charge for storage, and fees are typically based on capacity. Online backup services provide offsite backup, which is essential for disaster recovery. See backup types.  solution on the Linux platform. This is an exciting step and will lead to further developments in the use of IBackup for backing up enterprise data residing on Linux servers at data centers. Internet is changing the definition of backup. Instead of being a passive data archive that is referred only when some disaster strikes, IBackup is transforming backup to be an active repository of data that could be used for sharing, collaborating or even BTOB Data exchange. With its fast and efficient platform specific advanced solutions, IBackup is transforming the meaning of backup and online storage," said Shyam Appali, COO of Pro Softnet Corp.
