IBM eNetwork Software Offers Enhancements For Host Integration.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK Research Triangle Park, research, business, medical, and educational complex situated in central North Carolina. It has an area of 6,900 acres (2,795 hectares) and is 8 × 2 mi (13 × 3 km) in size. Named for the triangle formed by Duke Univ. , N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1998--

New Release of eNetwork Communications Server for AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families.  With Host Access Class Library Significantly Improves Host Integration Through Enhanced Application Programming and Administration

Available worldwide Feb. 27, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  eNetwork/1 Communications Server for AIX/1 5.0 continues the evolution of the industry leading AIX SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6.  software. As part of the IBM eNetwork Software family, this new version of Communications Server for AIX helps businesses leverage current networking investments and integrate new Internet and e-business applications for cost-effective network computing.

Users will experience better host integration, simplified administration and management, and easier application development. Solution providers will also benefit from new and enhanced application interfaces with IBM eNetwork Host Access Class Library. Host Access Class Library allows solution providers and application developers to easily develop critical applications across multiple operating environments while integrating their host applications and data with the Internet.

Benefits include:

-- Industry-leading host integration - With Communications Server, it is easier than ever to provide a complete host integration solution on the AIX platform. New host integration features include an integrated TN3270E Server, Java-based browser access to SNA 3270 applications, and frame relay connectivity. With these new features, Communications Server can make choosing a host-integration solution easy and cost-effective.

-- Easier application development - Both Users and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) will benefit from the new and enhanced application programming interfaces (APIs). These include the conventional LU application (LUA LUA Landesumweltamt
LUA Limited User Account
LUA Least-privileged User Account (Microsoft)
LUA Logical Unit Application (Microsoft)
LUA Launch Under Attack
LUA Lukla, Nepal - Lukla
) interface, also available on IBM's other eNetwork software products, enabling cost-effective application development across multiple operating environments. It also includes a powerful Node Operations Facility (NOF) API that can be used to write applications that administer CS/AIX configuration and management of resources.

The most exciting new API is the eNetwork Host Access Class Library, a new object-oriented Java API that lets customers and developers quickly and easily develop platform-independent 3270 and 5250 Java applications. Applications can now be developed without requiring developers to deal with the complexity of the underlying communications structure. This object-oriented implementation reduces the amount of required programming by up to 75% when compared to the implementation of similar functions using traditional APIs, such as EHLLAPI See HLLAPI. .

-- Easier administration and management - The new Motif graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Advanced peer-to-peer networking (networking, product) Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking - (APPN) IBM data communications support that routes data in a network between two or more APPC systems that need not be adjacent.  (APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) Extensions to IBM's SNA communications that provide the necessary flexibility to enable direct communication between users anywhere on the network. ) features such as self-defining dependent LUs (SDDLU) add to the ease of configuration, and high performance routing (networking) High Performance Routing - (HPR) Routing designed to work in conjunction with APPN Intermediate Session Routing (ISR) network nodes. HPR nodes perform many of the same functions as ISR nodes.  (HPR (High-Performance Routing) Extensions to IBM's APPN networking that enable SNA data to be sent over frame-based (Ethernet, etc.) and cell-based (ATM) networks. ) increases availability by automatically re-routing sessions around outages and congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

-- Simplified pricing and ordering - In response to customer demand for simplified packaging and pricing, eNetwork Communications Server for AIX is now priced based on the number of concurrent users rather than concurrent sessions. This new pricing is consistent with the pricing of IBM Communications Servers across all platforms, and may result in savings of 50% or more if the average user utilizes two or more sessions. The SNA Channel Attachment feature, previously a separately priced feature, is now included with the base product at savings of $5,000.

IBM eNetwork Communications Server for AIX Version 5.0 is priced at $995 (U.S.) per server and $69 (U.S.) per concurrent user. More information about IBM eNetwork Communications Server for AIX is available at http://www.software.ibm.com/enetwork/commserver.

IBM eNetwork Host Access Class Library, first introduced as part of IBM eNetwork Host On-Demand and eNetwork Personal Communications, is now being made available across IBM's entire family of communications servers.
