IBM announces new PCs based on latest Pentium technology.SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 1, 1995--IBM today added Intel's(b) latest Pentium(b) Pro processors to its line of business-oriented desktop PCs. In addition to sporting the fastest processor, the new systems add leading edge information storage and graphics technologies to IBM's PC 300 family of commercial desktop systems. This addition to the IBM PC A PC made by IBM. IBM created the PC industry in 1981 when it introduced its first model with 16KB of RAM. However, it was way off in its estimates, projecting that 250,000 units would be sold in the first five years. In fact, about three million IBM PCs were sold in that period. 300 family, available in December, will feature the new 150 megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz. MegaHertz - (MHz) Millions of cycles per second. The unit of frequency used to measure the clock rate of modern digital logic, including microprocessors. (MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ) Pentium Pro The sixth generation of the Intel x86 family of CPU chips. The term may refer to the chip or to a PC that uses it. Introduced in 1995 as the successor to the Pentium, models from 150 MHz to 200 MHz were released. processor, 1.2 gigabyte (GB) hard drive, 16 megabytes (MB) of memory, a 6X CD ROM CD ROM Compact Disk Read Only Memory and OS/2 WARP Connect The first version of OS/2 Warp to provide peer-to-peer networking to OS/2 and Windows machines. These networking functions were later added into the regular product line. See OS/2. (a). The PC 300 is priced at $4,773 without a monitor and $5,262 with an IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) 15" color monitor with a viewable image size On a computer monitor, the viewable image size or VIS is the actual amount of screen space that is available to display a picture, without obstruction from the case or other aspects of the unit's design. of 13.4", via IBM PC Direct(a). Additionally, IBM continues to work with Intel and will have PCs ready to utilize the 166, 180 and 200 MHz Pentium Pro processors when Intel makes those chips more widely available. Advances in Graphics Support The new PCs also include the latest 64-bit Matrox(b) MGA (1) (Monochrome Graphics Adapter) A display adapter that employs Hercules Graphics, combining graphics and text on a monochrome monitor. (2) (Matrox Graphics Accelerator) A trade name used by Matrox Graphics Inc. Millennium(b) graphics card. Power packed for true color desktop publishing, photo retouching or illustrations, the Matrox MGA Millennium card enables play back of full screen, full motion MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). video clips and takes advantage of hardware accelerated 3D rendering. This high level of performance allows users to incorporate these features into a business presentation or multimedia application. Storage and Memory Improvements The new IBM PC 300 comes with either 16MB or 32MB of parity or non-parity memory installed and is upgradeable to 128MB. An added feature of the IBM PC 300 with Pentium Pro Processor is that when parity memory is installed, it becomes Error Correcting Code memory which helps to reduce the chance for error and increase data integrity. Also offered is the latest in information storage technology with the Fast-20 SCSI adapter with a fast and wide hard drive tuned for performance. These drives provide the perfect complement to the Pentium Pro processor and the Matrox MGA Millennium graphics by providing quick response and enhancing system performance. Additionally, all IBM PC 300s with Pentium Pro processors will feature 6X CD ROMs. "Customers who use advanced 32-bit multimedia, video and high end graphics applications will experience dramatic performance improvements," said Ozzie Osborne, general manager, IBM commercial desktop division. "Engineers and scientists who perform advanced financial, mathematical and statistical modeling will benefit from the increased floating point performance capabilities of the new IBM PC 300." Configurations The IBM PC 300 with Pentium Pro processor is available in a mini-tower design with six slots and six bays. OS/2 WARP Connect comes preloaded on all models. One model of the new PC 300 is also available with no operating system installed providing flexibility to add another operating system. The system also ships with Triton CoSession(b) software which allows system administrators and help desk staff to remotely log-on to users' systems, view screens and take over keyboard control to resolve problems quickly and easily. Additionally, CoSession allows administrators to download device drivers and configure files either in-house or remotely from the IBM HelpCenter(a). Another IBM exclusive offered on the PC 300 is QAPlus(a) diagnostic software which allows the user and system support staff to easily diagnose common problems on all major system components. Service and Support IBM, long recognized as an industry leader in service and support, offers the PC 300 and 700 with an extensive three-year international warranty. Also, HelpWare(a) provides set-up, usage and service assistance around the clock, via telephone, electronic forum or fax during the warranty period. The HelpCenter, which offers customer assistance and technical support, can be reached at 1-800-772-2227. Copies of the terms and conditions of IBM's warranty are available upon request.
